Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda DiSilvestro.
Hi Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my career at discovercorps.com as a full-time online content writer in 2011, which is where I learned about SEO and the importance of link building with quality content. After about one year, I moved on to the SEO agency, HigherVisibility, to further hone my skills as a blogger and link builder for their agency as well as some of their clients. I worked there for four years, building up relationships with publications (and traveling the world!) along the way.
I eventually outgrew the grind of creating content everyday and found myself the head of the Marketing departments at a nonprofit, where I won a Regional Emmy for my work as an Executive Producer on a short film highlighting a Veteran in the community. Finally, I landed my dream job at a San Diego-based travel company, Discover Corps, where I worked for nearly three years. I absolutely loved my time there, but unfortunately, COVID really hurt the business (and industry as a whole), so I was laid off. I also found out just before the pandemic that I was pregnant with my first child so a bit of panic set in, wondering what I was going to do for work.
Fortunately, my husband had a great job safe from the pandemic, and we just finished a renovation project that was bringing in rental income. I decided that finally, after many years of thinking about it, this was the right time to start my own marketing agency. Since freelance writing in the marketing space was something I had always done as a “side hustle,” I knew I had the connections and the know-how to make my vision a reality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle was finding new business beyond the connections I already had in place. While I was able to earn the business of a few clients right away, getting my agency in front of new businesses was a challenge because I didn’t have the SEO (or visibility) yet, I didn’t have the reviews yet, and I didn’t have much money to pay for advertising.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Plan, Write, GO?
Plan, Write, GO specializes in content marketing and link acquisition – while we do have a heavy focus on B2B articles for marketing professionals, we also employ writers who specialize in the healthcare field and travel industry. We offer ghostwriting, guest writing and placement, and blog management. As a former Marketing Manager myself, I know how time-consuming writing can be and the importance of having a strategy (beyond just well-written content), so we aim to take this off of the plate of small business owners.
One thing I’m very proud of and spent the most time building with my business is our team. I hire and train writers who have prior marketing experience. This is our secret sauce (yes – I’ll give it away!). Too many agencies out there hire bloggers who have a quick turnover or a cheap price, but it shows in the writing. Beyond poor quality writing, it became clear to me over the years that I was being hired because I worked in the marketing field for so long. I understand SEO and how to write content that is optimized for Google, and I know how to read analytics and make sure that the content is actually making a difference for the business and their online presence. Believe it or not, you don’t get this with many content agencies out there, and I’m extremely proud that I have been able to build a team that truly gets it.”
