Inspiring Conversations with Amy Sage and Roni Nocon of ParentingEQ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Sage and Roni Nocon.

Hi Amy and Roni, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Here in San Diego, we’ve been on a mission to make a difference in the lives of children and their families. As school counselors for the past 15 years, we have seen an increase in mental health concerns and a big need for parent resources to support and nurture their children’s emotional health. After years of brainstorming what we could do to help reduce stress and increase emotional wellness, a pandemic hit and we knew it was time to act. We took a break from our school jobs to focus on what we could do to have a broader positive impact beyond the walls of just one school or one community.

After much research and first-hand experience working with thousands of children and their families, we launched our company ParentingEQ. ParentingEQ is a bimonthly subscription box that provides children ages 4-11 and their parents or caregivers tools to build their children’s emotional intelligence (the ability to identify and manage their emotions, communicate effectively, empathize with others, and problem solve). Decades of research shows that children who develop these skills early make healthier decisions and have a greater chance of leading successful lives. The great news is that emotional intelligence can be taught!

Now more than ever, these skills are crucial for our kids. As moms first and counselors second, our proactive approach is not intended to be just another thing to add to parent’s already full plates. The goal is to provide resources to help parents do the things they already do with a bit more focus on what kids need to take on the challenges of 2021 and beyond.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Launching a business in the middle of a pandemic has proved to be extremely challenging. As we both have two school-aged children at home, it quickly became a juggling act to tend to the business and the needs of our families. As this year has been the most non-traditional school year yet, ensuring our kids were supported emotionally and academically has been our priority. Though we’ve been able to build a company that we are extremely proud of, it’s been hard to find enough hours in the day to do it all. Additionally, our passion is to get in front of parents to not only educate about ParentingEQ but to provide resources and information on the importance of emotional intelligence and social-emotional learning. Though we’ve had some success speaking to parents through virtual presentations and social media platforms, our hope is to speak to live audiences in the near future, where we can have meaningful discussions and learn from each other.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about ParentingEQ?
ParentingEQ is a one-of-a-kind subscription box company with the purpose of increasing children’s emotional well-being by providing parents practical and easy to implement games, activities, and parenting tools. What sets our company apart is that there is not a comprehensive product for parents that helps build a positive family environment and increases overall emotional well-being and intelligence.

We have two lines, including EQ Mini (ages 4-7) and EQ Junior (ages 8-11) that appeal to all learning styles. Each box includes a book, a detailed guide, games, and tools all centered around an emotional intelligence theme. Over the course of a subscription ParentingEQ will provide you with the tools to tackle the toughest topics: Emotions, Conflict, Motivation, Mindfulness, and more.
