Inspiring Conversations with Jami Shapiro of Silver Linings Transitions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jami Shapiro.

After starting Silver Linings Transitions, Jami’s 15-year marriage and ended and she saw personally how difficult it is for women re-entering the workforce (whether or not it’s a result of divorce after taking time off to raise children) to find meaningful employment. Jami’s “why” combines her passion for women helping them develop the skills and confidence necessary to compete in today’s job market while helping clients who need extra nurturing and compassion during tough times. Her cancer diagnosis in 2004 was the wake-up call she needed to make changes in her life. Believing everything happens for a reason, Jami discovered the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) in 2014.

As someone who’s faced tough transitions herself, Jami sees Silver Linings Transitions and her role as company founder as professional and compassionate guides through the stressful process of moving during life transitions. The company specializes in seniors and divorcing couples but works with anyone wanting to make their move easier. The company also offers home and garage organization as well as photo organizing.

Jami chose the name Silver Linings Transitions because the company’s goal is to help find the “silver lining” for those facing a move and to be a compassionate and understanding resource for adult children who need to move their parents.

Her experience in real estate, moving cross country herself, divorcing after 15 years of marriage, and clearing her grandmother’s home after an unexpected death, enables her to understand the challenges of the move, both physically and emotionally. Over the years, she has helped many families losing their homes to foreclosure and short sales, which helped her cultivate the sensitivity needed to guide seniors who are proud and may not want to accept help or may not be ready to accept that new limitations make moving a necessity.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I officially “launched” Silver Linings Transitions on January 29, 2015 – my 45th birthday. I’d tried to get it off the ground with a partner for almost a year before, but we were unsuccessful, and she quit to begin work with her husband who’s business had taken off. The week after the official launch, my 15-year marriage ended. My daughters were 6, 11 and 13, and we had no family in town. I was building a business and facing a divorce simultaneously. It was then I discovered how difficult it was for new businesses to secure loans, and I had no partner to co-sign. I had two thousand dollars in my personal savings account. I opened credit cards with 0% interest, borrowed money from my daughter’s bat mitzvah account and from my former mother-in-law, Naomi Katz, who has remained a big cheerleader.

When I started the business, I had a real estate background and had gotten my license in San Diego. A friend listed a house with me and I was blessed when I was able to represent another client with “a birthday,” what the real estate industry calls it when you represent the buyer and seller. In the same transaction. Though it was very tough, I believed this was work I was “meant to be doing,” and doors opened just when I needed them to.

We’ve been impressed with Silver Linings Transitions, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are revolutionizing the move experience. Our clients never have to pack or unpack a single box. In as little as two days, we can move them from one home to the next, leaving them “done by dinner.” Their new home is organized, unpacked and decorated, making moves fun and easy.

Our passion is easing the burdens of clients in transition. My personal passion is creating a work environment for people who are re-entering the job market after taking time off to care for loved ones. We partner with one of San Diego’s top Realtors, Bryan Devore, the Director of Senior Services for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, who provide most of our services for free to his clients. Selling a home and moving is the ideal combination, and we tailor the move to the client’s needs with our Get Settled/Get Sold program.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success is knowing the people on my team feel appreciated and supported so they are giving the best of themselves to our clients and their families. As the mom of three girls, it’s also important my daughters are proud and see anything is possible even when life feels tough. While money is important, it’s a means to an end. I want to have enough to feel secure and be able to retire in one of the amazing San Diego senior communities we move residents into every day. I also want to be able to help my daughters get through college.
