Inspiring Conversations with Karl Burris of Live Life Physiotherapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karl Burris.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was growing up, my grandfather, who was disabled from complications from diabetes, was resigned to live his life sitting in his recliner watching TV; with his physical activity limited to going to doctors’ appointments. Toward the end of his life, a caregiver was assigned to help with daily activities such as meals and bathing, but what she did was so much more! On her own, she started to do some basic bed exercises with him and to everyone’s our surprise, HE GOT BETTER! His strength and endurance increased, his mood improved, he was able to be increasingly independent! I began to realize just how lopsided our “healthcare” system is. With our reliance on tests, surgeries, and medications, we tend to forget the person in front of us.

Many times, the most effective “interventions” are those made by people themselves! Behavior changes are hard and take a lot of work for the person and the guide. Physical therapy seemed like the best way I could help people not just survive but spend every day Living Their Best Life. Unfortunately, many physical therapy clinics are stuck in the same broken medical model that limits the tools that can be used to help people on their journey to achieve optimal results. That is why I started the Live Life Physiotherapy Mobile Clinic. We can be more accessible as we travel to peoples’ homes, gyms, offices, parks, or wherever is optimal for them. Our concierge options are adaptable to where people are on their journey to best suit the needs of the person in front of us. Behavior change takes time, but it is so worth it to develop healthier habits and increase physical abilities to maintain independence long into our retirement years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Covid has been a pivotal time for Live Life Physiotherapy. It was because of Covid challenges that we decided to venture into the unknown of creating something that can truly change peoples’ lives. In retrospect, it was a blessing in disguise as we are so incredibly grateful to learn the ins and outs of running a small business. Health insurance coverage will always be challenging as San Diego is very concentrated with HMO plans, but we think people are gradually starting to learn that services covered by health insurance are limited and often times not optimal for the desired outcomes.

As you know, we’re big fans of Live Life Physiotherapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Have you ever been to physical therapy to seen by the actual physical therapist for 10 mins and then passed off to do the same exercises that you could be doing at home? In the current healthcare environment in which costs are soaring, profits are put before patients, and big business and insurance dictate more and more of the care received. Live Life Physiotherapy is fighting back by providing a unique hybrid physical therapy and coaching experience that are tailored around the needs of the client. We are proud of our commitment to the long-term successes of our clients. Habits are hard to change and there are lots of ways to change them. We spend time getting to know each and every individual, learning their routines and habits so that we can offer meaningful and effective strategies to change their pain, improve their balance, make them stronger, and enable them to Live Life on Their Terms. Accountability is key. Anyone who has ever tried a diet or started an exercise program knows that the first week or even month is exciting, but without a coach there to keep them accountable and help adjust the program as necessary, old habits return. In our quest to change the healthcare game, we make every attempt to utilize a client’s health insurance; however that highly depends on the specifics of each plan. We are in-network with Medicare and can submit Out-of-Network claims for PPOs. Our benefits team checks for eligibility so there are no surprise bills six months down the road.
