Inspiring Conversations with Kevin and Amanda Wilson of Leash and Harness Coffee Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin and Amanda Wilson.

Hi Kevin and Amanda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Leash and Harness Coffee Company was created in a moment of spontaneity. The vision of doing “something more” however had been swirling around in my mind for years. I had worked as police officer for a local agency for about 13 years, having spent the last eight years assigned to the K9 Unit. During that time, my passion for service and working dogs grew as I realized through hands on training and handling of these animals just how amazing they are and what important roles they serve. My wife Amanda has a background in Kinesiology and she has worked clients facing many physical challenges ranging from ALS to spinal cord injuries. She has seen firsthand the value civilian service dogs have to their owners and the range of tasks they assist them in accomplishing in addition to the companionship they provide. Supporting working and service dogs and their missions became a huge “why” for both of us; Coffee became the “what.”

Neither of us considers ourselves an expert on coffee, however it is something we both enjoy. The thought came what if we could support the service dog community which we were both passionate about through a product we actually enjoy. Now that we had found our “What”, we wanted it to be more than just coffee….so we put an emphasis on freshness. All our coffee ships direct to the customer same day it’s roasted for Whole Bean and next day for Ground. Our customers get to support civilian, law enforcement and military working and service dog missions with every purchase while getting the freshest coffee you can find delivered right to their doorstep!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Time has been the biggest challenge. We started Leash and Harness Coffee Company when our daughter was six months old. We are also both still working in our original careers so there are some late nights and early mornings. We are content with slow, steady and organic growth however and have been happy with the buzz about our product within the working dog community. The other challenge we have faced is world coffee demand is high and there has been rising prices due to coffee shortages as well as increased shipping costs which keep margins thin. It becomes a balance of maintaining reasonable pricing while still adequately supporting the service dog non-profit organizations we value.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Leash and Harness Coffee Company?
Leash and Harness Coffee Company supports working and service dog organizations while providing fresh coffee from roaster to your coffee pot same or next day from roasting. Every bag of coffee and piece of merchandise we sell has a portion go towards a designated service dog non-profit which we select on a monthly basis. Additionally, we run limited release blends which benefit specific causes. While having the freshest possible coffee delivered directly to your doorstep is pretty cool, I’d have to say the missions we support is what we are the most proud of. We have worked with organizations large and small and have gotten to know so many great families and individuals who are doing great and amazing things and we are blessed to be a small part of that!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Authenticity. Not everything about our business is flawless. We are a “mom and pup” business and while we work extremely hard, we don’t know it all and we don’t have some of the polish of a corporate coffee company. Relationships and trust with people we work with is paramount; I think that’s how we measure success. Remaining authentic and knowing we didn’t sacrifice principles for profits will always be the most important metric of our success.
