Inspiring Conversations with Leila and Tony Savage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leila and Tony Savage.

Hi Leila and Tony, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are a husband and wife team and black-owned real estate brokerage business in South Park. After retiring from the NFL over 20 years ago, Tony decided to pursue a career in real estate. He played for the Chargers and fell in love with San Diego. Combining his affinity for San Diego and the impact he saw real estate make in his family growing up, he decided to build a business working with buyers, sellers, and investors.

Soon after we met and got married, I decided to get my real estate license as well. I saw the lifestyle he was living and the impact he had on clients’ lives, and I wanted in! I had worked in the spa industry and higher education recruiting and marketing for companies and institutions. I decided if I had so much success working for others, why not for myself!?

We are both business-minded and passionate about what real estate can provide for people and enjoy spending time together. We also bring complimentary strengths to the table, so we thought – let’s go for it! Let’s go into business for ourselves! Tony got his broker’s license, I got my real estate license, and Savage Realty was born.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building anything from the ground up always has some struggles. The first few years of our business, we each had side hustles. We were so focused on building the business and being able to both do it full time. That required a lot of output, energy, and budgeting. It’s an intense investment starting your own business.

We also had to get used to being married and working together every day. We had to learn how to communicate clearly so we knew when we were speaking as business partners or husband/wife. That took some growth on our part. We did it, though!

The real estate piece was never a struggle. It’s the building of a business and taking the leap that is a challenge! We are both incredibly grateful we have! Owning Savage Realty is worth any challenge because the reward is so great.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a Real Estate Brokerage and work throughout San Diego County. We represent clients in the purchase or sale of their home. Negotiating our clients best interest is top priority to us. Being in the business collectively for over 25 years, we are well versed on strategy to get offers accepted and marketing a home for sellers to get the most competitive interest. Education is key during the real estate process. Our clients often thank us for taking the time to explain the process to them and for being proactive in communication. It can be stressful buying or selling your home. We recognize that and want to absorb that stress as much as possible and offer expertise and clarity.

We joke that our clients get two for the price of one with Savage Realty. Tony and I work as a team. Our clients have access to both of us, which makes a big difference when it comes to strategy, availability, and representation.

In addition to working with buyers and sellers, we are investors ourselves. We can help facilitate out-of-state purchases for our clients who are looking to buy and hold property for passive income purposes. Not everyone can financially do that in San Diego; We have out-of-state markets that we can recommend and have invested in ourselves. In addition, to buy and hold rental properties, we also flip homes in other states.

Leila has recently become certified as a Feng Shui Consultant. We are currently working on building that service out for our clients as well.

How do you define success?
Success is peace. It is knowing that you have done and been your best. It is achieving what makes you happy and inspired. In the real estate world, success is getting our clients’ offer accepted. It is selling our clients’ home at a price and within the terms that they agree upon. It is providing them a positive experience, full of integrity, strong representation, and clear communication.
