Today we’d like to introduce you to Lilli Morgan and Savannah Duren.
Hi Lilli and Savannah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, we both had a love of Interior Design. When we first started LS Design Studio (L for Lilli and S for Savannah), we discovered that unlike other kids who drew the box houses with a simple chimney and a block front door, we both drew out intricate floor plans and detailed elevations of our dream homes (down to the design of the window casings). Although we didn’t know each other then, we were both fostering our love for design and sparking a passion within ourselves that would someday turn into our careers. When Sav graduated high school, she decided to stay in San Diego to pursue a degree in Interior Design at SDSU while Lilli decided to leave Ohio to get her degree in Communication and Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University. After graduating college, we both started our Interior Design careers at a residential firm here in San Diego where we met and eventually decided to become business partners. In May 2021, we took a leap of faith and launched LS Design Studio. Through gaining confidence in ourselves, becoming aligned in our goals, and receiving overwhelming support from our family & friends, we have been able to start a business that we are proud of and excited to grow.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has not been easy, but we wouldn’t change a thing! Deciding to “take the leap” and launch our business was absolutely a challenge, and we’ve had plenty of learning curves along the way. The Design and Project Management side of things comes naturally to us, however, learning the backend ins and outs of running a business has presented new learning opportunities. An unexpected challenge we have faced since we launched LS Design Studio is managing social media accounts. With platforms constantly changing (first TikTok, now Instagram Reels) we’ve learned to adapt and figure out how to best promote our company. We’ve developed strategies for consistently updating our website, creating fun and educational videos for TikTok and Instagram Reels, posting blogs with our tips and tricks and sharing our inspiration, original content, and behind the scene site visits. With the challenges we’ve faced so far, we are lucky to have friends who have reached out to offer advice, support, or help – and for that, we are so thankful!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
LS Design Studio is a full-service Interior Design firm focusing on large-scale remodels, kitchen and bathroom renovations, and full home furnishings. LS aims to strike a perfect balance between function and form and places high value on doing things outside the box. Although San Diego is our home base, we welcome projects nationwide and our organized client process ensures an enjoyable experience from our first meeting to the last accessory. We are proud of being able to create unique design aesthetics for our clients while adding a fresh, organic feel to each space. To think that we started this business from the ground up during a pandemic, we could not be more excited about the progress and growth we have seen so far and cannot wait to see what the future holds! Something our readers should know about us is that we are both so passionate about functional and beautiful designs and love working with clients to create their “dream homes”! From the moment we walk into a new space, our minds are full of design ideas. Every client uses their space differently, which is why layouts and designs will always be unique. We love what we do, and our goal is for our clients to love the design and process as much as we do!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
This is a tough question – We’re not sure if “luck” is what got us where we are today, but we do feel like there have been a series of events that felt “lucky” or “unlucky” during the course of starting our business. For example, a few months into the pandemic (which originally felt like it was going to shut down the Interior Design industry altogether), things took a turn and the demand for design services increased exponentially. That said, regardless of a pandemic, we do feel extremely lucky to be doing what we love every single day. Receiving “I can’t wait to work today!” or “Is it Monday yet?!” texts from each other is pretty typical and we know loving a job this much is a rare feat to come by. Waking up and knowing that we are doing exactly what we are meant to be doing is something that makes us feel lucky every single day.
