Inspiring Conversations with Madison Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Johnson.

Hi Madison, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a passion for the beauty industry. In 2016 I worked as a makeup artist for Bare Minerals. It was at that time in life where I realized I had another love for skin and making others feel confident in their own.

I have been a licensed esthetician since July of 2018. My first job was a fast-paced spa that taught me a lot. I learned how to become a fast waxed, how to create the environment for a facial, how to create clientele, etc.

The Covid-19 pandemic hit and it made me open my eyes to what I really wanted in life. In February of this year, I was given the opportunity to branch out onto my own. Verté salon has always been a home for me. When I was living in Hillcrest, I came to the salon for my hair and my nails. It was always a dream of mine to work in their spare room. When Kim and Leeanne asked… I said yes! I came with no clientele and started from the bottom. I now have amazing clients on my books and a beautiful space to work in.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Has it been rewarding? Of course. However, being a business owner was never something that I thought I could do.

On top of opening my own business during a pandemic, I also dealt with trying to advertise myself. We as an industry also had to navigate the state and county regulations for when we were allowed to open safely.

It takes a lot of organization and preparation. I definitely learn something new every day. My career quickly switched from relying on a business to keep things running to just me making sure everything is handled.

There have been a lot of “shoot,” “ah ha” and “yay” moments. It is definitely part of the process and only helps you grow.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am very fortunate to work in beautiful, green circle certified salon. It’s amazing to work for a salon that truly cares about the environment. I have committed my services to be vegan and cruelty-free.

It is actually pretty hard to find a salon in those categories so I think that is what sets us apart from other businesses.

My services include waxing (both hard wax and soft wax) and customized facials. The consistency of my wax is truly amazing. I love working with hard wax because it is so gentle on the skin and it contours to everyone’s body shape. This type of wax doesn’t adhere to the skin but mainly to the hair. This creates a very comfortable hair removal process.

I think I have always been known for being a gentle waxer. I’m very patient and take pride in my work. I have a very bubbly personality and love to create a safe space for my clients.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always running off to meet people and ask what their dog’s name was. I have always been very friendly with a lot of different passions.

I was a huge animal lover as a kid and was also always playing outside in the dirt. My favorite activity as a child was anything having to do with art. I couldn’t even tell you how many art camps I did.
