Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Roshnaye of Evergreen Alliance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Roshnaye.

Hi Melissa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Being of service to other people has been on ongoing theme in my life from as young as I can remember. I have also always been equally drawn to business and organizing money. I went to college as a business major knowing that I wanted to specialize in something, but not knowing what. When I took my first accounting class I knew it was the perfect fit for me. Throughout college I volunteered with various children and youth programs and always wondered how I was going to fit together my different passions that were seemingly at different ends of the spectrum. After college I joined the Peace Corps as a Business Development volunteer and was assigned to Bolivia, South America. During my time in the Peace Corps I was introduced to the work of large international NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) and filed that away as one more thing that interested me and would somehow fit in the pieces of my life’s puzzle. After my experience with international development, I started my career in public accounting as an auditor and became a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). I always connected with and enjoyed the people at our nonprofit clients. It was also during this time that I met my dear friend Stacey Bergman who I would co-found Evergreen Alliance with. My career and life path continued to collect experiences and interests that included serving people, working with nonprofits, and accounting. I kept connecting with small businesses and nonprofit organizations that needed a strong accountant, but didn’t need or have the resources for a full-time CFO or Controller. The culmination all of my personal and professional pursuits was the launch of Evergreen Alliance, a boutique CPA firm that works exclusively with nonprofit organizations.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life is linear. What appears to be a straight path in life and careers are usually a collection of disconnected dots on a chart that look all over the place, but if you stay consistent with pursuing your various interests and passions those dots find a way of connecting to each other. Each of the stages of my professional life have been met with a moment where there was an undoing of expectations. Where I made a decision or took a risk thinking I would reach a certain outcome and then it didn’t work out the way I had hoped, so I had to change and adjust and accept I needed to let go of one thing to make space for something better.

As you know, we’re big fans of Evergreen Alliance. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Evergreen Alliance is a boutique public accounting firm that works exclusively with nonprofit organizations. We provide audit and tax compliance services as well as outsourced accounting, consulting, and CFO services. Everyone on our team is equally passionate about accounting and the work our clients do in their communities. Nonprofits have unique financial reporting and tax compliance requirements so that they can maintain their tax-exempt status and raise the funds necessary to do their work. We partner alongside organizations and help them fulfill those reporting requirements.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Everyone on our team at Evergreen Alliance is direct contributor to the success of our business and the support we are able to provide to the nonprofit organizations we serve. In particular, our firm’s co-founder Stacey Bergman is the other half of my brain and equally passionate about the work we do that allows the nonprofits we work with to do their work.

Outside of work my husband Karlo has supported me through each of the shifts in my professional life that has brought me to the founding of Evergreen Alliance. He even learned how to make the perfect cup of pour-over coffee which fuel the long hours and late nights that go into my work.
