Inspiring Conversations with Paras Kumar of DebateDrills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paras Kumar.

Hi Paras, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School in 2011. I did my undergraduate work at UC Berkeley, where I graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science.

In high school, I participated extensively in the RBHS Speech and Debate program, competing locally in both speech and debate events at local San Diego invitationals, regional California invitationals, and national invitationals / round robins. My passion for speech and debate stuck and I decided to start DebateDrills, which is a fully online speech and debate coaching company.

I moved back to San Diego to be close to home and work on growing DebateDrills in December 2018 and have had a blast along the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has had ups and downs…I have had to learn by trial and error. Simple things like “which credit card processing system is most effective for small businesses” or “what scheduling software is the best designed for our needs” or “how should we handle payroll” or “what’s the most tax-friendly method to structure the corporate entity” are all topics I knew nothing about when I started DebateDrills. It’s resulted in a lot of long nights and errors along the way, but I am grateful for the support from the people who work with me and the encouragement from my friends and family.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are the first and largest fully-virtual education service provider in the United States speech and debate industry. Our predominant offerings are an online debate camp, group classes, private tutoring, and a travel club team. Since inception, DebateDrills has generated 1mm+ in revenue as a fully online internet business, delivered 10,000+ hours of services, and has established itself as the competitively most successful for-profit debate-coaching group in United States competitive debate history. We are most proud of our track record of excellence and commitment to individualized education.

In terms of what we’d love to convey to readers: learning the art of public speaking, debate, and research is a skill that pays dividends regardless of how old you are. We’d love to chat with you further if you want to explore how customized debate education might help you accelerate your growth as a speaker, writer, and researcher.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I moved around a lot. I was born in India, moved to LA when I was four, upstate New York when I was eight, and San Diego when I was 12. I had a pretty stereotypical millennial boy personality – was very into pokemon and basketball – go Lakers!

My parents were very intent on making sure academics were a top priority in my life, so I spent a lot of my childhood in a fairly studious environment. As I started to mature in high school and gain independence, I discovered a passion for music, traveling, and nature (I went on a lot of hikes in San Diego my senior year of high school).
