Life and Work with Alexxis Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexxis Harris.

Alexxis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating from Chico State in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, I moved back to my hometown of San Jose, CA with a feeling of uncertainty. What do I do now? Where am I going to work? How can find a job that I’m passionate about within the scope of my degree?

I flip-flopped back and forth trying to figure out what path to take while considering my strengths, limited experience and interests. Well, that took too long and it boiled down to… I need money and I need money NOW. I always envied my peers that w…”I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I was playing doctor as a little kid” That’s great! But why didn’t I have it that easy? I desperately wanted to find the missing link between my interests, beliefs and my strengths which I believed would end up being my passionleading to a career. So, for the better part of my twenties, I took a traditional desk job and started the path to somewhat slow self-discovery toward my ultimate passion.

In the fall of 2013, I took a leap of faith and decided to take my first outside sales job which brought me down to sunny San Diego. I immediately knew this was the place for me; good people, food-scene (I’m a foodie), nightlife, outdoors, and most importantly, 75 degrees most of the year! My sales job lasted much longer than I ever thought, 11 months! But the biggest takeaway I got from it was that I loved to be around people. Even though I was not a fan of the product I supported, I thrived and looked forward tomy visits to the storefronts I managed and working with people every day.

Once I left the sales world, I took a short time to really figure out and self reflect on what drove my passion in this world. I finally linked it together that I’ve ALWAYS loved being a social butterfly, making people feel good, and a beauty product junkie. Everything about the industry fascinated me! I decided to tour the local beauty schools and landed at Bellus Academy in El Cajon. I figured out quickly that Cosmetology was not the right fit (minus the fact that I grew up doing everyone’s hair….friends and family alike). So, I decided that my love for popping pimples and being a product junky drove me to the Esthetician program which was undeniably the right fit for me. Day one of school came, and I never felt more at home with my decision. Fast forward five years later and Howlite is open for business!

Has it been a smooth road?
Just like anything in life, there are ups and downs and I had my fair share. From making the decision to go to an Esthetician school (which at first my parents almost had heart-attacks, “but you have a degree we paid for!!”), to making close to nothing that anyone could survive on living in San Diego, to building my clientele, to leaving my first esthetician job at a local spa to open my own business”… the highs and lows are what ultimately make you who you are and even that much stronger. But through it all, I have learned three very important things… 1. NEVER ever give up 2. ALWAYS stay true to yourself 3. KEEP the company (people) that believes, supports and wants to see you shine!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Howlite – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
After you are licensed as an esthetician, I feel like you are just this new little fish in the sea of TONS of people in the industry trying to set yourself apart from the rest. Trying to be that “diamond in the rough”. I was lucky enough to start my career whilst still in school and begin a training program at my former employer that taught me life long career skills. From techniques in hair removal to sales to how to speak and treat clients. I was very fortunate to have this extensive paid training and I believe that it has a huge part in why I stand out from the rest. Since day one at Bellus, I have always “needed” out on skin and ingredients. I wanted to know what did what and why it did it. With that said, I have always prided myself in being educated on the basics and also diving deep into the details of skincare, along with keeping up with the trends (and also knowing when the trend is just over!) When I was creating my menu for Howlite, I really wanted to be able to bring my knowledge directly to my clients. Instead of going off on a tangent about the different layers of skin and what they do, I decided that to best show clients my knowledge, would be with completely customized treatments. That way, each and every client feels that their needs and concerns are being heard and I can build trust (that is ever so important in this industry). Whether you come in for a facial, resurfacer or peel, your products are meticulously selected for optimal yet realistic results based on your concerns. I also am currently educating myself on how internal factors like diet, hormones, healthconditions can play a huge part in your external appearance. All factors are considered and discussed when you in for a consultation before your facial.

Leaving skincare (my first love) and on to hair removal (my other love), I offer full body waxing and sugaring, specifically specializing in Brazilians and brows. Sugaring has kind of stolen my heart and I am SO glad that I had the opportunity to learn it before I opened Howlite. For those of you who are saying “what is sugaring” (which most people do)… sugaring is the ancient form of hair removal dating back to the Egyptians consisting of a paste made with sugar, water and lemon juice. It is applied to the skin opposite hair growth and removed with the direction of hair growth. It is extremely gentle on the skin leaving little to no redness/discomfort with long-lasting smoothness!

I am most proud of the fact that my clients know I am a genuine and caring service provider that takes their skin and self-confidence very seriously! I want to help you feel and look your best whilst in a relaxing, easy-going environment.

Who have you been inspired by?
I have a few but the number one is my mother. She has always inspired me to be nothing but my real authentic self, unapologetically. Growing up, she always encouraged me to have confidence in myself and said that being independent would allow me to reach all my dreams and goals. Not only did she never give up on any of my aspirations but she supported each and every phase of my life with unconditional love and encouragement.

Secondly, my close knit group of girlfriends (some that I have had since Kindergarten) have been some of my biggest supporters and fans throughout my whole life but especially since opening Howlite. Without their endless words of encouragement, I would not be where I am today. You know who you are and I am blessed to have each and every one of you in my life!

Lastly, my extremely loyal and wonderful clientele (not only the women) inspire me every day to push myself to be the best service provider and boss I can possibly be. Without them, I would not be where I am today by any means. I am forever grateful for their support through the years and always believing in me! Along with clients, I am constantly inspired by my peers. In such a saturated and competitive industry it takes a drive and determination to stand out from the rest. I am constantly inspired by other successful estheticians and entrepreneurs in my industry. In an industry dominated by women, I think it is especially important that we support and build each other up while staying true to our own beliefs and values as estheticians!
