Life and Work with Aubrey Hancock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aubrey Hancock.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Aubrey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Huck Phinn Leatherworks was born out of an adventure.

I had a moment back in 2018 where I asked myself a very important question: if I could wake up tomorrow and do exactly what my heart longed for, what would that look like?⁣

My answer was “oh, I’d probably travel around in a van and make leather goods to pay for gas.”

⁣I knew my love for exploring wasn’t something I couldn’t shove into the weekends & time-off portion of my life and still be satisfied. I also knew that I love to work with my hands. Leatherworking had been a hobby of mine, but I never imagined making it my trade. Until I did. I sat and pictured what it would look like, what it would feel like, to be doing exactly what it is my heart longed for.

And here I am, making high-end leather pieces out of my rig.
I’m very much an all or nothing kinda gal. So, I cross my fingers, close my eyes, and hope it works.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggles I have faced have been with my own mind.

Is my work good enough? Am I charging too much? Will I fail? Can I afford to take this chance? What if I run out of money? What if no one buys anything EVER?!

You are not alone. When I was struggling, I started talking with some other boss babes that looked like they had it all figured out- they didn’t, they struggled with the same things I did. That solidarity helped me move past my fears. And passed myself.

And once you realize that your fear is the only thing hindering your growth, everything else will work out. There is a market for everything. There is always a buyer. There is always money to be made.

Taking a chance on yourself is the best gamble you can take- you control the odds. You’ve got this.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I create high end, handstitched, and handcrafted leather goods from my mobile workshop- a 1985 Toyota Dolphin.

My work is made to ignite your next adventure.
From jewelry wraps, camera straps, and bags to archery tabs, knife sheaths, and tool rolls- adventure looks different to everyone. My goal is to make your path a little smoother.

The materials I use and the hand-stitching techniques that I apply help create durable products that will age well and last the test of time. Each piece is inspired by the places I visit and the people I have met along the way. Every product I make is a way of infusing my adventure with your adventures to come.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Oh gosh, yeah! What an incredible time we are in right now. WOMEN ARE EMPOWERING WOMEN. Any opportunity is a great opportunity right now. There will be women to back you, solely because they want to see their sisters rise up. So, get after it and let your ladies hold you up!
