Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Reyes.
Bianca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a 25-year-old illustrator and graphic designer. Graduated from Platt College San Diego with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Media Arts.
I always had a love for art and illustration it was never something that I forced myself to get into. When I was a teenager, I spent lots of hours into drawing, creating characters and doodles, that is the thing that has always characterized me as a person.
I have a background working in graphic design but never got myself into illustration until now. I’m a girl who is very into conventions, theme parks, art events, movies, etc… what inspired me to start drawing and illustrating again is all of those people I would see every year offering and sharing their work, there is something so amazing about presenting yourself and your art to everybody and be like “This is me, this is what I do, here I am” but I used to be very shy and self-conscious about sharing my art.
One day, I just suddenly realized that there is about plenty of people in the world, I’m sure someone will like my work, artists come in different shapes and forms. And drawing has always been my passion, I just didn’t want to give it up.
I’ve had my Instagram account for about quite some time now but only sharing drawings occasionally it wasn’t until maybe a year ago when I started to share more art. I saw the positive reaction of people towards what I do, it is a lovely feeling. I still have a lot to learn as an illustrator artist and have many goals in this industry but I’m happy to have started sooner than later.
Has it been a smooth road?
As an artist, it can take quite some time for people to start noticing you, but most of the time it isn’t about the art itself but the artist and how well you promote yourself.
One of the #1 advice I can give not only to new artists but to anyone who wants to start with an online presence is to build up a following because the more following you have the more exposure you’re gonna get. This is something that I am still currently working on.
It can also be challenging to find your distinctive art style but the long practice and time is definitely worth it!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work with digital illustrations, sometimes I like to add glitter into my printed designs and very occasionally, I make traditional hand-drawn art.
I create a lot of original designs as well as fanart. Some of my most beloved ones are my bunny “Buns” (who is my signature mascot) and my series of cute food illustrations “Yum Yum Snacks”
One of my biggest (if not my biggest) inspiration has always been Disney and the Disneyland parks, not only regarding design but also because of the positive message they deliver to their audiences. What I want to transmit through my art is happiness and joy. I want people to look at my vibrant colors and feel cheerful.
To share a little bit of my world to yours.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
My favorite App/Social Media platform is Instagram. There is something quite positive within the Instagram art community that none of the other platforms have. I have discovered and connected with amazing artists full of creativity and talent, I feel like we all share the same goal which is to present our work with the world.
Another app/website that I use a lot is Buffer.com because it allows me to schedule social media posts from my computer and then post them from my phone or I can just have them posted automatically. It’s a lifesaver if you ever forget to post something or simply if you wanna save time typing all those hashtags for Instagram on your phone.
