Life and Work with Christy Holcomb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Holcomb.

Christy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Color has always done it for me. I love color… especially of the pink variety. Growing up, I loved meticulously organizing my crayons into rainbow order (it’s a thing) and the shades of pink always came first. Pink is my color. Pinkalish is my creative passion.

Inspired by my constantly twirling daughters, I started hand making these whimsical little tutus almost eighteen years ago. I found great satisfaction in seeing them beautifully merchandised in boutiques around the world. A rainbow of tutus can really light up a boutique and the smiles they bring to my clients make me happy.

Then life got a little crazy with three busy kids and the launch of a successful women’s fitness apparel brand with my identical twin sister (RunningSkirts). My beautiful little tutu creations had to take the back burner for awhile. Although, I am humbled and happy to say that I have many of my original retailers still selling my tutus eighteen years later, I just didn’t have the time to focus on developing the brand back then.

Flash forward to the here and now, my oldest daughter has left the nest to pursue a career on Broadway (yes she’s still twirling) and I realized how much I truly missed the joy of creating and designing these beautiful little fluffy works of art. So… I’m back at it… enter Pinkalish… my brand of exquisite handmade tutus. I am still wholesaling my original designs, but now my focus is on creating much more exceptional tutus. I am using more fabric (fluffier is better) and higher quality finishes like silk peonies, magnolias and French velvet. I design each and every tutu to be unique and I personally hand make them all with a whole lot of love and personal detail… in pretty much any color imaginable.

Has it been a smooth road?
I am pretty sure entrepreneurship is never a smooth road. It’s all those bumps in the road that painfully push you to grow and ultimately help you achieve success. I think right now the biggest struggle for me is finding balance. Being an entrepreneur, a single mom and staying fit is my three ring circus. I live this quote: “Find three hobbies you love: one to make you money, one to keep you in shape and one to be creative.” Having these three things brings me a semblance of balance… my own organized chaos. Where these three hobbies have overlapped is where I have realized my greatest successes.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pinkalish – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a self proclaimed modern day tutu fairy godmother. I love creating beautiful, whimsical little works of art that bring joy and happiness to the small set. Life can get so serious but it is always more fun in a tutu! I love special orders… from birthday parties to weddings… making little dreams come true. I set myself apart from others by seeking out exceptional and stylish florals, high end fabrics and gorgeous finishes. I do not mass produce and go out of my way to design each and every tutu to be original.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel women are conditioned to work harder to reach a certain level of success. We are excellent multi-taskers and stellar problem solvers. We are passionate and compassionate. We are creative. We have this amazing network of support among women business owners/entrepreneurs. Behind every successful women entrepreneur is a tribe or a sisterhood of love, encouragement and support. I wouldn’t call these opportunities but rather strengths that we (women) have that make the magic happen.
