Life and Work with Danielle Wu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Wu.

Danielle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2017, I was hit with a double wakeup call when two of my closest loved ones were diagnosed with cancer. It changed my perspective in two ways. The first being that life can be unexpectedly short and the second is that I wanted to take better care of myself and the world around me in order to live a healthy and more fulfilling life.

While I grew up in California, I made my way to New York City as soon as I graduated from college to be part of the electrifying energy coursing through the city and the people there. I excelled quickly in my career specializing in digital and eCommerce growth for several large brands, with my latest role helping to run an over 800+ Global Marketing Team for American Express Commercial Services.

I thrived having the constant stimulation of the city. Always on the go, I wanted to maximize every minute of my day, whether that was work or play – every minute of every day was filled. I had so much fun traveling and working with teams across the World but eventually knew that my constant state of exhaustion would catch up to me. With health being top of mind, I started to focus on getting quality sleep as it is a common link to many illnesses. I upgraded my sheets to breathable cotton sateen, started using essential oils, got noise cancelling headphones, and used a sleep mask to block out light.

These methods greatly improved my ability to fall asleep but I was still waking up through the night a bit sweaty or itchy. I started to research fabrics of the pajama sets I owned. I learned that sleeping in silk is the best for you and the environment. It not only is made naturally, but it is also naturally sweat-wicking, breathable, resilient, and smooth. What’s more, once you discard it, it biodegrades without leaving any trace on our earth. So great! I just need to get some silk pajamas. Problem is everything was marketed as “Silky” but was actually made of polyester, a product of petroleum oil. The sets that I found were REAL silk were priced at $400-$1000. Not exactly affordable…

I felt like there had to be a better way to set out to deliver real silk essentials at direct to consumer pricing. I decided to move back to California to spend more time with family and to build a brand that solves this problem. More Sunday is about remembering to take care of yourself while getting the most out of your day. Reminiscent of my always-on-the-go New Yorker days the 100% real silk pajamas, pillowcases, and eye masks are made to be as beautiful as they are Multi-Functional. They have become my sustainable daily uniform in and out of the bedroom. Once you put them on, you won’t want to take them off.

Has it been a smooth road?
There are daily obstacles and challenges! They are what makes starting your own business fun because you get to learn new things every day. Having launched just shy of a year one of the personal challenges that I have had to overcome is the loneliness that can come with starting and owning your own business. Aside from physically being alone most of the time, I’ve found that it’s also hard to find a peer set who can relate to the ups and downs entrepreneurship entails.

Having worked in large corporations and living in a dense city like New York, it was an especially hard adjustment not seeing people all day. In order to overcome this, I focused on networking and joining different groups in the area. It took a few tries, but now I have found reliable networks where I am able to connect with people in my same mind frame. I am able to spend more time with my family and can focus on taking care of my health. It has also opened the way to a lot of new connections – like you! Whom I never would have met if it weren’t for starting More Sunday.

My advice for young women who are just starting their journey is you ARE good enough and you are ready! We each have something we can offer to better this world. If you have a passion for something, you owe it to yourself and the people of this earth to explore it. You can always start by testing it out as a side hustle before you make the financial leap of quitting any 9-5 you may be currently working. Remember though it isn’t always the peachy Instagram #entrepreneurlife that you often see, but it is hard work and you do have to sacrifice a lot of your social life working weekends and nights to grow.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with More Sunday Silk Essentials – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
More Sunday sells dream-inducing real silk pajamas, pillowcases, and eye masks. Our silk pajama sets have been designed to be just as wearable in the home as it is out of the home. Silk is traditionally known as a luxury fabric made for special occasions, but I’m here to change that by adding it to your everyday. We spend at least 1/3rd of our lives in pajamas (but if you’re anything like me, it’s the first thing you change into when you get home… So closer to HALF of your life!) While I’d promote everyone to wear silk all the time to minimize your contact with irritating chemicals, this takes care of minimizing contact for at least half of your life!

Silk’s smooth texture can also make anyone feel sexy without having to be revealing. It can also help you get a better night’s rest. It is naturally hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating so no more being itchy or too hot or too cold. Additionally, silk has 18-amino acids that help to soothe and regenerate your skin. I like to think of it as skincare for your body.

What sets us apart is the trust you can have in our company in knowing that you have a quality garment that has been carefully crafted to be as versatile as you are. The difference is in the design details. You can expect things like pockets because you can never have enough, flat front waistbands so you can tuck in your top for an instant polished jumpsuit look, and curved hems to elongate your legs.

We are really proud that we have taken measures to be a sustainable brand and give back a percentage of sales to Oceana for ocean clean up. From start to finish, we do our best to design even our packaging that is so lovely that you’ll want to keep and reuse them.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
A Harvard Business Review study points out that the leading factor in creating a successful company culture is to create emotional safety in the workplace. I believe that being a women equips you with the natural ability to listen more carefully and to create a work environment where everyone’s opinion can be heard without fear of negative consequences. These positions women-run businesses to be more successful because this allows all opinions and views to be heard which can often lead to better business decisions.

Women also make up half the population so are uniquely positioned to see problems that need solutions that maybe a man would not be privy to. For example, Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx, saw an opportunity to transform the tights industry which had been led by men. Because she is a woman she was able to come up with a solution that actually works for women. This unique perspective is the entire difference that has made her a billionaire!

It is my belief that industries where things were originally designed by men have an opportunity to be shaken up with views from women.
