Life and Work with Dee Peri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Peri.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I had 10 years of experience in the spa industry before I decided to open my own Wax & Skin studio. My intention was to create an environment where clients felt comfortable in the hands of an expert and I succeeded!

In 2012, “Wax Haus and Skin” opened and within 6 months my reputation as a ‘Hard Wax expert’ rapidly spread throughout San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. I had clients reaching out to me seeking better waxing experiences, education, results and to ask questions about this “interesting wax” I use. Hard wax was not a popular product back then..

I had (and still have) clients begging me to go to their location, to either provide wax services or to train others.

I was trained in East Coast, at one of the most advanced Esthetic schools, where I learned in-depth hard waxing techniques. When I moved to San Diego, 10 years ago, no one was using hard wax, it was very difficult to find a job for almost 3 years. I refused to use strip wax because I knew how harsh it is to the skin.

When I was ready to hire my own team, I discovered that only few people had the training, experience, knowledge I was requiring, therefore made it impossible to hire. After 200 interviews in 3 years, I had to figure out a way to help other Estheticians and to pass on my knowledge. Mostly for the clients’ sake!

That’s when I decided to become a hard wax trainer and educator. It took me 2 years to put together the curriculum and training I wanted to provide, but it was well worth it!

The “Wax Haus Methods”, is a unique, advanced training program with a focus on the expert use of the hard waxing techniques and education of the Esthetician/Waxer– not a specific wax brand. Even though I’m in the process of creating my very own wax brand!

My intention is to educate others and improve their waxing techniques, to share my “secrets”, knowledge and experience of my 15 years in the industry. To teach them how to genuinely care for their clients’ skin, results and education.
My mission is to connect with spa owners, resorts, hotels and high-end spas across the nation and be their educator and trainer.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My biggest struggle is finding other estheticians to hire and create the team I want.

I questioned it a lot… I asked everywhere and everybody and I discovered that only few hard wax educators exist across the nation.

I would advice all the Estheticians to get as much training as they can from mixed sources in the industry. To invest money and time in their career, skills, training, education. To NOT practice on clients, to seek reputable companies to work and learn from. To get as much experience needed in order to feel 100% comfortable to perform any skin or wax service.

This will create much better client experiences and hopefully will eliminate all the ‘bad’ stories you hear on the internet. Remember, everything starts with the Esthetician and the education she has, then the quality of wax product she uses (always seek for hard wax!) and how she’s able to educate you, answer any questions you might have and give you great advice on how to care for your skin after.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Wax haus and skin – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a well-known Esthetician for my hard waxing methods, anti-aging treatments and acne facials. My scientific approach, passion for waxing and skincare is what makes me the best in my field. My passion shines through in every aspect of my work – from the customized services I offer to each client, to the love I have of training others professionally.
I also have my own line of high-end mineral makeup products, ideal for oily/acne skin. I personally use for the last 14 years!

My hard wax techniques, my training, skin knowledge and experience I have in the field, my outstanding online reputation and organic reviews posted everywhere, the constant amazing feedback I get from clients I meet and from students I train, is what really sets me apart in the whole San Diego county and beyond.

My vision is that “Wax Haus and Skin” spa will be recognized throughout the whole southern California region as a center of excellence – both for treatments and for training.

I also hope that a time will come when all spas will offer a level of service to match ours. To further this I’m committed to sharing my expertise through my ‘Wax Haus Methods’ training program. As the knowledge of best-practices and hard wax methods spreads more widely, I hope to see standards rise throughout the sector.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I feel women are not as comfortable asking for help or seeking support from each other. I also think the generation that raised us was not comfortable to share their opinion or personal goals, therefore, we never learned how to do so alone. No one taught us to seek within, to find our own morals, values, opinions. We learned to follow rules set by others (family, culture, society, church, school, etc..). It’s hard work to look within and if no one ever exposed us or encouraged us to do so, then how would we know?
I believe if we had more self-growth seminars, at a safe, comfortable environment for all of us to get together and discuss openly our fears, mindsets, struggles, experiences, goals, visions, our life would be more joyful, successful and happy! (Maybe, it’s the Greek in me that makes me think like that!).

In my field, women can be very protective of the “secrets” they know, because they fear clients will leave them. What they don’t understand is that clients go to them for many reasons, not only for the services they receive but because they make them feel comfortable, like their personality, have a mutual connection of some sort, like the spa room or facility, etc.

Women, and men, need to learn to leave behind their ego and fears and to be authentic, real and honest. To not worry to express themselves, to be confident in their abilities and unique personality and to admit their weaknesses.

No one is a competitor or at least should be. Clients will go to the ones they feel comfortable and connected with. They need to learn to be comfortable in their own skin and to believe in themselves.

I am a huge fan of life coaching and self-growth seminars. I took more than 7 classes/seminars last year, read many books about self-growth and spirituality and learned so much about myself, others and how the human brain works. It’s a work in progress, never ends, always gets better.

I strongly encourage everyone I meet to get involved in these type of seminars. I believe they are extremely beneficial and can help you find your own voice, to discover your true authentic shelf, to stand up for yourself and give you the confidence to be exactly who you want to be. This type of internal work can completely transform someone and allow them to be a great leader in any industry and in life in general.
