Life and Work with Elena Marques

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elena Marques.

Elena, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my skincare career as a licensed cosmetologist a little over ten years ago, but after developing severe allergies to hair dye, needed to change the course of my career. I always had an affinity for the science of skin and quickly adapted and felt it was the place I always belonged. I spent many years in a spa, working directly with clients, and many years after that as a specialist for multiple high end respected brands like Perricone MD, Kate Somerville, Dr. Dennis Gross, and ZO by Obagi. Working in that setting with so many clients, really gave me a firm grasp on what people were looking for in skincare, what people needed, and where there were huge gaps in what was available.

Nine years later, I set out to create a facial soap for my own use. One that I could use to address my occasional eczema patches on my face, that would also handle my hormonal breakouts. After all those years, I still wasn’t able to find a single acne product that didn’t trigger an eczema flair or irritation. I knew that the same 2 minerals that were known to be effective for acne, were also effective in treating eczema. From that, came my very first soap. My skin responded so well that I posted it for sale among my friends and acquaintances. Because of its quick popularity and positive feedback of the relief it provided, I decided to keep pushing forward trying to create other natural solutions to more common skin concerns that everyday people like me struggled with, in an accessible way. Before I knew it, my brand came to life. It came from my belief that high-quality skincare that not only feels good but is also effective should be affordable and accessible. It shouldn’t be so expensive to treat issues that make us feel uncomfortable in our own skin.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were definitely a lot of rough turns along the way. A lot of needing to find new ways to stay in the industry, road block after road block from allergies, chronic illness, injuries, and other challenges. My best advice is that life and careers are full of small victories and failures along the way. It’s very easy to lose our small victories among our failures… but it’s imperative we don’t. The victories need to be held up and held close to us when our failures hit us hard, where it hurts. That all the highs and lows along the road are taking you exactly where you’re meant to be in your career. Preservence is key when it feels the most discouraging, and if you can’t find an existing place that feels right in your industry, carve one out yourself.

Please tell us about BelaDoce Botanicals.
I make botanical and mineral-based skincare with an artistic edge, formulated for sensitive skin. Something in particular that I pride my brand on is that I don’t believe in selling insecurities, we don’t thrive on convincing people there are things wrong that need to be fixed. What we do provide, however, are luxurious self-care rituals at an accessible price, full of natural clean ingredients, to help encourage comfort in your own skin. My acne care facial soap and toner are definitely my best sellers, I believe because so many people like me are unable to use the typical acne care product without irritation and mine takes such a different, anti-inflammatory approach. The 24k Rose Gold Glow Spray, an organic hibiscus and rose water spray infused with cardamom and 24k gold flake is also among my top sellers. My hand carved crystal soaps are where I believe the artistry really shines through. They are three times hand poured and carved to create the final product. Most include a small polished stone inside or contain 24k pure edible grade gold.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
In many ways, my own chronic illness and frequent allergy and skin struggles as a young child led me to this path. So often as a kid, I had to sit out of sports tournaments and dance from my chronic illness and carved a space for myself with art instead. Many years down the road, I finally found a way to combine my love of creating and art, with my years and years of skin experience with my own struggles, and that of my clients to create my brand and philosophy.
