Life and Work with Jean Quinn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Quinn.

Jean, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I spent many weekends at my grandmother’s house as she taught me the art of sewing. She was a tailor for many years at our family dry cleaners in Pasadena, California. She was a perfectionist, thus my most used tool became the seam ripper!

As a mom I loved sewing dresses for our baby, Emily.  Life got busy and I took a hiatus from the craft…A few years ago I began sewing baby clothing as gifts – then started getting requests for more, and Ninidelmar was born.

Most days (and nights!) I am hard at work hunting for fabrics, cutting out patterns, and spending hours sewing them up.  I work with customers getting their children’s measurements to ensure a perfect fit. I just finished creating three matching cotton knit bodysuits for newborn twin sisters and their 6 month old  “big” cousin. I love what I do!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing Ninidelmar has been so much fun. I love the creative process and the connection with the sewing community and my amazing customers. However, being a “one woman show” has its challenges. Sewing a garment, no matter how little, takes hours. I have much more to learn about time management! Finding quality fabrics is difficult, due to most fabric stores that have gone out of business.  It’s a challenge to break into the wholesale fabric world. For anyone just starting out, my advice is to do your research and work hard establishing connections with fabric designers and manufacturers. Sewing groups on social media are helpful and supportive.

Please tell us about Ninidelmar.
My modern classic designs for girls & boys, are unique and higher quality than store bought. I love sewing with designer fabrics in cotton, cotton stretch knits, and linen. Everything is pre-washed and tailor-made, with soft linings.  Custom items are available upon request.
