Life and Work with Jill Domina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Domina.

Jill, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved art and creating whether it be drawing, painting, or crafting. As I got older, I knew I wanted to have a job in which I could create art every day. I feel like cosmetology was meant for me, I could never be anything else! I grew up in Chicago and did hair there for almost 6 years when I decided to move to San Diego.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Leaving my whole clientele in Chicago and starting fresh in San Diego was a HUGE gamble. I had worked for years building my books in Chicago and was just getting to the point where I was busy and doing great financially.

But sometimes, success doesn’t determine your happiness. I knew I wanted to leave my hometown and experience something different. I knew if I didn’t do it soon I’d never do it!

Making the move to San Diego was one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. I’ve been here for 2 years and in that time I’ve built up an amazing clientele, and I get to live in this amazingly beautiful city.
My take away from this whole experience is to take risks. If you want something, DO IT! If you don’t, you’ll always wonder “what if?”.

Please tell us about @hairbyjillyd.
As my career has progressed, I’ve become so in love with blonding. Blondes are a large portion of my clientele and I pride myself on keeping my clients informed and their hair very healthy during all processes!

I also love to work with tape in extensions and special occasion styles.

Working with extensions gives me limitless possibilities with my clients’ length, density, and color.

I’ve always lined special occasion styles and I even worked with a wedding company in Chicago for some time.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Being a hairdresser in 2018 is a beautiful thing. Not only do I have access to traditional hair education, I also have access to many educators sharing knowledge on YouTube and Instagram. I have my favorites and watch them religiously. A few are Justin Anderson and Brianna Cisneros.
