Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandice Ellis.
Kandice, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for hair began at a very young age.
As a little girl, I always found myself giving my dolls makeovers whether it be a new hairstyle or added make up for a more glammed look. Eventually, that turned into me being my friends own personal hair stylist which Is where I practiced the latest and grew to love the hair industry even more. I’ve always enjoyed bringing the beauty out of what some would consider dull and even make the attractive more appealing.
As I grew older I realized even more how much the beauty industry contributes to our confidence. We all enjoy looking and feeling beautiful so I made it my mission to continue making those around me feel beautiful one hairstyle and smile at a time. And to this day I make it my business to bring the inner beauty out of my clients by making them feel beautiful on the outside.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey so far has been very rewarding but has not always been a walk in the park.
Some of the struggles I faced when I first began promoting my business was consistency and support. Being that there are a ton of great hair stylist in San Diego sometimes it’ll feel as if you are in competition but as the famous saying goes “what is meant for you will always be for you” same goes for clients.
The ones that are meant to build with you will stay consistent and grow with you and those are the ones you hold on to. This business is constantly growing, so I learned I have to constantly be evolving as well. I also learned that not everyone will support at the beginning but eventually they’ll come around just stay focused and never stop learning.
Please tell us about KosmoByKandi.
I am the owner of KosmoByKandi where I specialize in hair, makeup and just recently eyelashes. I offer services ranging from natural hair care to custom wigs. I pride myself on being affordable and accommodating. I understand not everyone is able to splurge on hair care which is why my prices are made affordable and priced with my customers in mind. My prices alone set me apart as a business owner because I do not charge an arm and a leg to bring your vision to life. My mission is to make you feel like a million bucks without having to spend it.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
At this particular moment, I am proud to say us women are creating our own opportunities. For so long we were made to feel less than or as if we couldn’t do what the men were doing. But we are no longer waiting to be seen or heard we are becoming our own bosses and building platforms for those around us to do the same. It is definitely the Year of the Woman, and again I couldn’t be more proud of my fellow women business owners and entrepreneurs.
