Life and Work with Kara Willingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Willingham.

Kara , can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
From a young age, I’ve always loved to move. Energetic, some call it, my zest for life has always and continues to push me to follow my dreams and grow along the way. My yoga practice has shown me how to find stillness, connection, and more profound meaning in my life, especially when a lot is going on around me. My gratitude is infinite for the opportunity to share yoga with our community and to work with like-minded individuals every day.

For many years I worked in the beauty and wellness industry. I’ve managed salons and day spas, worked in sales, written and blogged about wellness, and I’ve met many incredible humans along the way. Before becoming dedicated to my practice I dabbled here and there, Buddhist meditation, a heated yoga class or two, but I discovered the real benefits of yoga, meditation, and a regular practice when I joined Pilgrimage of the Heart Yoga as a member in 2013. After embarking upon my first retreat, I found a deeper connection to my mind, body, and soul.

Over the next few years, I did a whole lot of yoga! I enjoyed workshops, community meetups, group classes and knew I had found something special, something that I would continue to explore. Since then I’ve completely immersed myself in the world of yoga.

The stars aligned and I joined the Pilgrimage team in 2017 as the North Park Studio Manager. Within my first year, we opened the new North Park location, and I graduated from our 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training! It’s been an incredible journey, and I am so thankful for the support of my husband, family, friends, and teachers.

Has it been a smooth road?
Struggles and changes in our direction are all part of the adventure. It’s all about timing, and I love knowing that each of us is where we are meant to be right now.

Dear Women, You are beautiful, capable and strong. I love you! Support each other and raise each other up. Stay open and find moments of solitude within yourself. Trust your intuition and nurture the little girl inside, make her proud.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pilgrimage of the Heart Yoga – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I love what I do! I work with the fantastic team and community at Pilgrimage of the Heart Yoga as the North Park Studio Manager. At Pilgrimage, we believe that yoga is for everybody and we offer a wide range of classes, so there’s a little something for everyone. We also offer free meditation every week! I am so proud of the community our Normal Heights, and North Park studios have created as well as our experienced and knowledgeable team.

As I mentioned earlier, I recently graduated from our 200-Hour Teacher Training and am now teaching as well! I am honored and proud to share the gift of yoga with my students. My classes combine asana, the physical postures and the spiritual teachings of yoga.

What sets me apart? I do all things with love and believe that all of us are unique and can learn from each other. Each time I am on the mat I learn and each time I teach I learn from my students. I love to learn always, in all ways.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Passionate about something? Dive into it, learn all that you can and connect with those sharing knowledge about the subject. Don’t be afraid to open up and communicate with others about topics you’re interested in. Sometimes all it takes is discussing something that you have in common with someone else to start a friendship or business relationship.
