Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenna Carter and Danielle Esparza.
Kenna and Danielle, please share your story with us.
Established in 2016 by a mother and daughter; an esthetician and a nurse.
It’s a simple story: An innate desire for a cleaner life. We took a closer look at what products we were using on our bodies and realized that hardly anything contained natural ingredients; we could hardly even pronounce half of them! We wanted products that we felt safe using on the new babies and grand-babies in our lives. We wanted natural, pure, and simple ingredients that were without parabens, synthetic chemicals, and detergents and made with ingredients that could be pronounced. Through our research, we also discovered the incredible benefits of Goat Milk. Rich in Vitamin A, alpha hydroxy acids, and minerals such as selenium, we knew we wanted to include it in our products. In a world of instant gratification and mass commercialization, we took months developing the bars we handcraft and prepare today. We practiced, and still do, the time-honored tradition of soap making and test only on friends, never animals. We craft recipes that we are proud of. We feel we’ve developed rich and nourishing bars, that cleanse and leave you feeling refreshed without stripping your skin; bars that we felt confident using on ourselves and our families. We are dedicated to handcrafting in small batches to ensure we’ve created products we stand by.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When it comes to soap making, it’s a very unique blend of chemistry and art. When we first started, it was definitely trial and error coupled with a lot of research. It was not, at all, a smooth road. We had a vision for what we wanted to create, but in order to be successful, we wanted a unique product that met the needs we had: naturally cleansing, nourishing, healthy sustainably sourced ingredients, and beneficial for our bodies. With those ideals in mind, we had our work cut out; we took months to formulate our recipe and many, many (many!) bricks of soap were made, cured, and tested to see if they met our needs. Some were great, others were sheer disasters. We learned and grew so much during that first year. As we continue to grow Brick and Scale and add new products, we are constantly creating, trying, and testing new recipes. There is no place for becoming stagnant in business, change is always necessary.
As for advice to other women just starting their journey: Don’t Quit! If you have a passion and a vision, run with it. Be creative, strive for greatness, and don’t be afraid to fail!
Please tell us about Brick and Scale.
Brick and Scale is San Diego based mother-daughter owned small business dedicated to creating hand-crafted goat milk soap; made with natural ingredients, herbs, and essential oils. We craft our bars based on their ability to naturally cleanse without harsh chemicals, sulfates, and harmful parabens.
We are exceptionally proud of our products! We really love the bars that we’ve created; they are rich in skin loving oils and butter. As an example, one of our best sellers is The Bedford; made with Goat Milk, olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, rice bran oil, and castor oil, saturated in rose clay and scented with Peppermint essential oil. It makes a wonderful facial bar, that can be used on the body as well. The Rose Clay is gentle enough for all skin types and provides a refreshing and invigorating experience for your skin. Check back on our website soon – we are in the process of launching new and richly pampering skin and bath products!
We strive to provide our amazing customers with unique Goat Milk soap that they can trust. We try to buy organic and sustainably sourced ingredients whenever we can. Our Goat Milk is made by happy goats that are never fed anything genetically modified and raised on farms that do not use any sprays, pesticides, or insecticides. Our Goat Milk is whole, pasteurized, and has no BGH (growth hormones), antibiotics, or preservatives. Each brick is crafted by hand in small batches to guarantee you are receiving the best product possible.
We also love our customers! They provide wonderful feedback and encouragement and we wouldn’t be where we are today without them.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
As a mother-daughter owned business, we feel the opportunities are abounding. If you have passion and a vision, anything is possible. We started with a passion for beauty products and a vision of creating a healthy bar of soap that naturally cleansed and included amazing powerhouse ingredients, including Goat Milk, coconut oil, shea butter, mango butter, castor oils, and 100% therapeutic grade essential oils.
Women are amazing – we are strong, unique, powerful, and gifted with incredible talents. Step out and use them; be kind, encourage other women, and support local business!
We hope to be inspiring to other women entrepreneurs, be bold and brave and pursue your dreams!
