Life and Work with Tara Fontana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Fontana.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since I was a little girl, I have been obsessed with weddings. I grew up in the salon with my mom being a hairdresser. I actually had my first bride when I was 8 years old. I remember it well. From then on, all my Barbies had braids and different hairdos and there was always one getting married. Out of high school, I went directly to cosmetology school followed by makeup school in Los Angeles. My first hairdressing job landed me on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills at Jose Eber. Not a bad place to start. I moved around a bit until I found a salon that I was happy with. I worked in Malibu, where I had a good high end clientele. But I lived for the weddings, special events and prom clients. So, there comes Fairytale. I made a website, got a booth at a bridal show. The response was overwhelming. So, I decided I needed to find other artists with the same passion and talent to work with. We started in Southern California. Then, I went to Vegas and hired a crew. Then came Northern California. Being a Disney fanatic, I have always wanted to work with Disney, that’s where the name Fairytale came to mind. I have always dreamed of my own Disney Wedding. It was a dream come true when Disney Fairy Tale Weddings gave me a chance.

In 2006, I gave birth to a baby girl. Catalina is my Fairytale Princess. Soon after her birth, I decided to leave the salon world to be a stay at home mom and just focus on my passion, my company. What could I do to bring Fairytale to the next level? That’s when I went at hired a crew in Central Florida and met with Disney Fairytale Weddings at Disney World. This was about the same time that we got the chance to work on My Fair Wedding With David Tutera. What an honor to have the praise from someone like David Tutera. We ended up doing 16 episodes of his shows and was honored to have been chosen to do the hair & makeup for his personal wedding.

In 2015, I married my own Prince Charming. He too is in the wedding industry. It’s been such an adventure collaborating his Wedding DJ Entertainment Company with Fairytale Hair and Makeup. When we met, his company was a one-person operation doing friends weddings and referrals, now his company, Bouquet Sound is at about 400 weddings this year! Pretty amazing what we have been able to do together, under the same umbrella in this industry we are both very passionate about.

There is no better job in the world. I am truly blessed to have the talent and opportunities I have been given. Through our countless awards and referrals, my little business has continued to grow. We have around 30 artists spanning 5 states. Together, we do about 450 weddings & events a year. I am so proud to have been able to help other artists grow and pursue their passion as well. To be apart of the biggest day of our client’s life is truly an honor. Thank you to everyone for your support, and for making Fairytale what it is today!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not a smooth road. Have wasted a lot of money on advertising in places that don’t work. Have had artists on our team that didn’t work out quite as expected. Things in this industry as in every industry is always changing. When I started Fairytale Hair and Makeup, there were really not many other mobile hair & makeup companies. Now with social media, everyone is a mobile hair & makeup artist no matter what their training and experience are.

My advice is that if you are starting a business and you are really passionate about it, whether the storms. You will find what works for you. Build your OWN brand, your OWN relationships. Don’t copy someone else’s. This is your baby. You need to find what works for you to have your baby grow and be successful. It will be very rewarding because no matter how much work it takes, you never work a day in your life cause you to love what you do!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fairytale Hair and Makeup – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in wedding and special event hair and makeup only location. We have done hundreds of Disney Weddings over our time, so we have a big audience of Disney fans. It’s funny because even if the bride isn’t getting married at Disney they tend to be a Disney fan. You don’t have to be a Disney person for us… we just seem to attract them.

So many proud moments. So proud of all our accomplishments. All the awards, all the incredible weddings we have been a part of. The people and venues that have chosen us and referred us. The brides that have chosen us to be a part of the biggest day of their lives, such an honor. But the most rewarding thing to me is my team. We wouldn’t have the success we do if it wasn’t for them. This is not my company. It’s our company. Giving these artists a place to do what they love an earn a living doing it. I have had some artist on board for over 10 years! To be a place someone wants to work and the artists stay and love being a part of it… that’s amazing!
