Life and Work with Teressa Laeske

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teressa Laeske.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Teressa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been designing and making jewelry for over 25 years. I fell in love with designing jewelry just out of high school at a local bead store while I was living in Humboldt, CA. Back in San Diego a few years later, a friend of mine taught me how to actually make jewelry and it was all over, I became obsessed. Working in restaurants in my 20’s, I was selling the jewelry I made right off my body, taking custom orders and carried a roll of made jewelry wherever I went. I couldn’t make it fast enough. It was the best feeling in the world to have people love and want the creations that I made! Fast forward quite a few years, my husband’s job transferred us to Hawaii, where we enjoyed the vibrant colors and free-spirited creativity that comes along with island life. Working two jobs and still loving to make jewelry on the side, I took courses to learn soldering and hammering techniques while pregnant with my daughter. When my daughter was born, I wanted her name/initials on everything. That’s when I taught myself how to personalize jewelry. After 7 years of living in Hawaii, my family moved back to San Diego and I decided to turn my love of making jewelry for myself and my friends into a business. For the last four and half years, I have worked to expand my product line and website. I have been fortunate to be able to showcase my designs in local retail locations and in New York, meet my customers face to face at makers markets in California and Colorado. I feel grateful every day to be able to do what I love!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road feels fairly smooth now, but there were plenty of bumps along the way in the beginning years.

The biggest struggle for me was feeling overwhelmed with all of the responsibilities that come along with being a business owner.

You can’t do it all! Realize what your strengths are and don’t be afraid to ask for help with your weaknesses.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Teressa Lane Jewelry – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Teressa Lane Jewelry is designed and made by hand in San Elijo Hills. Handcrafted in-house using high-quality raw materials, such as 14k gold, 14k gold filled and sterling silver. Starting with wire and sheet metal we hand cut most all of our components, such as disc’s, tags, bars, and moons. We make as many findings as we can by hand, even as our clasps and ear wires.

We specialize in personalized custom orders. We love designing, creating and hearing the personal stories behind each of our pieces.

Who have you been inspired by?
I’ve been in love with gemstones and beautiful things in nature since I was a little girl. I grew up in the foothills of San Diego in a small town with plenty of time and nature to explore. One day, I discovered a washed out creek bed and began exploring for treasures and found the most beautiful polished rocks. Later, I was told that a gemstone tumbling quarry up the hill had lost most of their inventory due to a heavy rain season! It sparked a lifelong love of stones.
