Life and Work with Thanya Chiangtong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thanya Chiangtong.

Thanya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hey everyone! I’m a single mama of an almost 9-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son. I am also the owner of ALIGN fitness + barre, a pop-up barre studio. I was born and raised in Southern California and graduated with a BS in Biology from UC Irvine. Some twists and turns in my life lead me to a career in the music industry with Live Nation/Ticketmaster for a few years, then I became a stay at home mom after my daughter turned 1. I’ve always been a fitness enthusiast and stayed active by running, swimming, and practicing yoga. I eventually developed a love for barre over six years ago, when I took my very first barre class, 16 weeks pregnant with my son. I loved how challenging the class was and how it made me utilize muscles I didn’t even know I had. I was surprised at how quickly my body changed after a few classes, and I was also impressed by how safe and effective barre can be for clients of all ages and body types. I never thought I’d ever become a fitness instructor, but I found myself always wanting to help other students in class achieve the proper alignment and engagement of the barre exercises so they can get the most out of their workout. I then became a barre instructor in January 2017 at a local barre studio. However, the studio I taught at sadly closed its doors in March 2018. I didn’t want to give up teaching and I loved the community of supportive women we had at the studio so I took a leap of faith and turned my hobby of instructing into a passion, by developing ALIGN fitness + barre in April 2018. It has now been a year since I launched the pop-up studio. Through word of mouth and social media, it’s been amazing to see how much ALIGN has grown and the community of strong students who support our small business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t have a background in business so there has been a lot of learning along the way, from something as simple as keeping up with social media, to marketing, and constantly keeping our class formats fresh and challenging for customer retention. I encourage women who are just starting out to be positive, work through your challenges and always give 100% of your best effort. Arm yourself with knowledge. If you don’t know, ask. If you need help, don’t hesitate to get that support. There will definitely be some obstacles that may seem impossible to face, but as long as you believe in yourself and try and try again, your efforts will pay off. I always see challenges as a potential for growth.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with ALIGN fitness + barre – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Align Fitness + Barre is a barre studio offering an extremely effective and engaging barre workout suitable for all fitness levels. Our classes are designed to work the whole body, incorporating the ballet barre, your own body weight, light hand weights, bands, and exercise balls to tone, sculpt and shape your body.

We offer two types of classes at ALIGN. Our ALIGN Barre 60 class is a 60-minute class that combines strength training and stretching. We focus on four main areas; core, arms, thighs, and glutes. We use light weights and high repetitions to fatigue your muscles which we immediately stretch out afterward to achieve long, lean muscles. You will definitely feel the burn!

Our ALIGN Interval class is a class designed to improve your cardiovascular health offering a faster-paced class lasting 45 minutes, structured in intervals. Periods of high intensity followed by low intensity will maximize your results. The class is set to fun upbeat music, to keep your energy lifted and your spirits motivated.

What sets us apart from other studios is that we are highly focused on alignment to keep your body safe and your workout effective. Instructors provide hands-on adjustments and modifications throughout the class to suit your personal needs, whether you’re working through an injury, are pregnant, or need additional support.

We also provide childcare! There aren’t very many studios that offer childcare, so we pride ourselves in being able to give moms a chance to focus on themselves, get a good workout in and allow their kids to mingle and play while doing so.

I am a big fan of the Dalai Lama and everything that he represents. Kindness and happiness go a long way no matter where you are in the world. To keep me grounded and help me be my better self, I love The Book Of Joy, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
