Meet Kandra Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandra Jones.

Hi Kandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always worked in a salon moving around San Diego from Mission Valley to Hillcrest to Downtown and landing in the La Mesa Village. La Mesa has been my home base now for over 15 years! While starting out my business behind the chair, I found a passion for formal hairstyling and playing with makeup. I love watching and learning from other stylists. I am a firm believer that there is always something to learn from those around us.

As I grew my salon clientele, I took time off of providing hair and makeup for weddings and formal events so that I could have my babies and raise them a bit. I have two boys who are now 11 and 9. I love being a boy mom! I decided I was ready to get back into the wedding industry and build by freelance hair and makeup business again. Twirly Shears was born in 2018, and I started putting myself out there and advertising for myself. I was starting to gain traction and the bridal business started coming in. I had a dream to build a team on that day. I dreamed of being so busy that I would need other stylists and makeup artists to join me in helping serve all the brides and their bridal party babes.

Then… the pandemic. While all of life stopped, I had to pivot. Life as we knew it would never be the same. My first pivot was to withdraw my boys from public school and homeschool. I had never imagined this for me and for us. It was hard, it had challenges, but it had amazing rewards! We just finished our first year of homeschool and we THRIVED! Schooling my children became my first priority, but I mastered it and knew it was time for my next pivot.

Us creatives were yearning for a chance to get our creative juices flowing, but the wedding industry was still dormant. So, we came up with styled shoots that were just for us, to give us a reason and a purpose to do what we loved. Then emerged something else new… branding shoots. I said yes to everything because I just wanted to play and be creative. And just as the world is waking and opening back up, the wedding industry is coming in like a tidal wave. It has been dubbed the Covid Comeback, and it is in full force!

Because of this, my dream has come true. Twirly Shears is no longer just me. We are a team! We have a steady flow of wedding inquiries coming in. Brides are booking and are so excited to finally be able to celebrate and have their dream wedding. The Twirly Shears team is here to help babes feel good in their own skin, to be classy and fabulous. We serve all of San Diego and North County, and we are willing to travel beyond when the opportunity arises.

I am surrounded by an amazing network of fellow boss babes. I am blessed beyond measure by the opportunities God has brought my way, and while it feels like a whirlwind at times, I strive to take nothing for granted and enjoy every leg of this journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge when building any business is to remember that it doesn’t happen overnight. And it won’t happen if we just sit and wait for it. Anything worthwhile takes time and effort. My road hasn’t been smooth, but it hasn’t been terribly rough either. As long as I’m putting in the effort, which takes time and effort, I see the benefit. Being intentional reaps rewards.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist and makeup artist specializing in natural glam. My goal is to give you a glow-up, enhance your natural beauty and keep you looking like you. I am known for providing a natural look while also giving a glam experience. I’ve had many gals say, “wow, it feels so light and looks so natural” in regards to makeup. When creating hairstyles, I often hear, “it’s exactly what I envisioned!”

Having been in the business of glam for 20 years, I have seen styles come and go. I make sure to educate myself with what’s on-trend and practice these looks to make sure I can deliver a perfect glow-up. I tend to be drawn to weddings, but I love working with branding and styled shoots also. These all fulfill my creative drive differently and I love the diversity of each aspect of the varied shoots.

I am most proud of my ability to truly understand what is being asked of me. I am a very good communicator, and I know how to provide a thorough consultation so that me and my glam gal are on the same page about the desired look. I feel what sets me apart from others is my passion, experience, and longevity in the beauty business. I have encountered many a challenge, seen some wild looks and I’ve worked through trend changes. There is nothing that can surprise me or throw me off. I’ve done over 100 weddings and glammed thousands of gals along the way. I am seasoned and passionate about every creative opportunity.
