Life & Work with Karolyne Mier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karolyne Mier.

Hi Karolyne, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been a plus-size person. From wearing husky size pants with the elastic band to wearing just leggings because jeans don’t fit or I was too embarrassed by the size I needed to buy.

In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, I hit my highest weight, weighing in at 250lbs. My plan was to get gastric bypass because every diet I tried never were successful. My classes were booked and I was ready to move forward with this new life. The day before I needed to start my classes, someone asked me to start doing keto with them and I kinda just laughed about it because it was another diet. Another waste of money but I said “why not”.

I started to learn more and more about keto and I decided to start doing strict keto. Many don’t know but there are different types of keto and strict keto was definitely hard!

I lost about 20 lbs. the first month and just kept going. Within the year I lost about 55 lbs. and then stopped because I finally was at a point in my life where I was finally happy about my body and my weight.

In the process of changing into the keto lifestyle, I struggled with wanting desserts, ice cream, or snacking and one night I literally looked at my husband and said, I’m going to start making keto desserts and I’m going to use what I know from the culinary industry to grow from that. Treat Yourself Keto was created that night and I never looked back. It’s definitely been a hard journey but I also wouldn’t look back!

Over a year and half later, my following and clientele grew, meal prep grew and the demand for products I was making were becoming a daily necessity.

From there, I decided it was time to look for a location for TYK to finally open up officially so we can be available to everyone!

December of 2021 was when we finally open our doors in the Montebello Community, right on the corner of Beverly Blvd and Bradshaw Blvd.

Many clients come on a daily because keto isn’t just a diet, it’s a lifestyle that many live but don’t realize they are. Many who are diabetic or have high levels of hdl, have to technically live a keto or low carb lifestyle without thinking about it!!

Keto has helped many and many don’t realize that! From depression, anxiety, diabetes, high hcl, etc., and I’m here to help have access to products or food items that will help continue this lifestyle.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. In the middle of my living my keto lifestyle, I suffered a miscarriage which threw me off track and I went back to not carrying what I was eating or how much I was eating. I gained about 25 lbs. back because I was struggling with depression and my mental health just wasn’t in the right place for me to focus on myself. I still continued to grow my business through this hard part of myself and that’s what pushed me, even more, to open up. Something was taken from me for a reason, and this was my reason, my reason was so that I can focus on TYK and continue to grow.

Also, right now, with pricing of everything going up, times are hard! But this is nothing compared to what businesses had to go through on the middle of the pandemic!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a cook. I’ve been cooking since 2012. From dishwasher to head chef. I’ve been in and out of restaurants and catering companies cooking and just bringing amazing food to the table!

I’ve always been known as the hard worker or the one everyone could rely on to get the job done or to be there when needed. I’m currently now known as the “keto girl” & have been called this many many times being out at place or just being out with friends.

What I’m most proud of? Honestly, my daughter, & the fact that I have the ability to show her what it is to be a female business owner! Never in a million years did I think I would be baking or running my

Own business!

I think what sets me apart from others is my attitude, my love for food, and the fact that no matter who you are or how long I’ve known you, the moment you walk into TYK, you are family! And we will always treat you like family!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Never give up and you can’t do everything on your own.

I’ve cried and screamed soooo many times in the walk-in because I was overwhelmed, exhausted, hangry, mad, or just tired of feeling tired. BUT the most rewarding of this journey is that I can lock the doors to my own business. Not someone else, MY Own.
