Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Power.
Hi Leslie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2009, my husband needed some corporate gifting for his company for Christmas. He wanted it to be something memorable. Growing up, my grandmother Lavon Suker made toffee at Christmas time and gave it out to family and friends. It was crazy popular and everyone looked forward to receiving it. My sisters and I grew up making her signature toffee and carried on the tradition with our families. It didn’t take me long to decide that this was what I would do for my husband’s company. The first year I made the toffee, it was very popular and I had people calling me and asking where they could buy it. The next Christmas rolled around and my sisters’ and I decided to brand the toffee and call it “3 Sisters’ Toffee”. My sisters and I are very close and the toffee carried a lot of special memories and I wanted the name to reflect that.
I originally only made and sold the toffee at Christmas time, but as my kids got older I knew 3 Sisters’ Toffee had a lot of potential. I decided to see if I could grow the company and I did just that. I looked into getting a Cottage Food license that would allow me to make the toffee in my kitchen at home and sell it in stores, boutiques, farmers markets, and hotels. 3 Sisters’ Toffee started to grow and it has continued to grow every year. This Christmas, I will make over a thousand pounds of toffee. This small company has brought me so much joy. I must tell you, I work hard! I work harder than I would for anyone else, but I love it! I know my grandmother is smiling down on me. I love this quote by Russell M. Nelson “The Lord loves effort, and effort brings rewards.” This quote resonates with me because I put a lot of effort into 3 Sisters’ Toffee and that effort has paid off. I never imagined 3 Sisters’ Toffee would be where it is today, NEVER.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My biggest obstacle has been keeping up with growth. If 3 Sisters’ Toffee is in your store or hotel, it sells and it hasn’t taken people long to figure that out. This Christmas, I have had to turn down multiple stores that have reached out and wanted to carry 3 Sisters’ Toffee, but I am limited to the amount of toffee I can make. I do hire friends and family at Christmas to help me, but “it’s made in a home kitchen” and that limits what I can do.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What do I love about 3 Sisters’ Toffee? I love that I can carry on the tradition that my Grandma Suker handed down to my sisters and I. My grandmother was an amazing cook. She refined the toffee to perfection and when you taste it, you can tell.
