Life and Work with Mia Nissen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Nissen.

Hi Mia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Southern California and made the move to Colorado for a few years for college. College was really the timeframe where I learned about what I want and need from life. Like many people, I also made some really stupid mistakes during this time that were rooted in just not prioritizing myself. Through a lot of trial and error, I realized how important self-care and self-love were and how, for the most part, I wasn’t living in alignment with those values. My early twenties were all about relearning how to take care of myself as I was going through typical “post-college” stuff: starting my career, having to move back in with my parents, bad relationships, and adapting to life not living near all of my best friends. It felt chaotic to say the least. But, I did so much mindset work during this time that really helped anchor me- even when everything else felt out of my control. When I turned 24 is when I think I really hit my groove. I began traveling. I committed to a Yoga practice. I attended music festivals like crazy. And, I got really comfortable doing things alone. Eventually, I landed a job that I really loved and could set my sights on the move to San Diego that I had always wanted. I made it happen and have now called San Diego home for two years! I live a life that is grounded by a great career in digital marketing, I am surrounded by meaningful relationships, and I prioritize self-care before anything else. This has set the foundation for me to commit to my passions of being a content creator and blogger in the wellness and self-care space.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been boring, that is for sure! I’ve had my fair share of challenges as I not only figure out life but try to build my own business as a content creator and blogger while also working full time. But, I think the biggest struggles have come with changes in my relationships and adapting to those. It is so hard to remain open and vulnerable when your instincts tell you to shrink and “just deal with it.” Especially when you are someone who is working to build a public career on social media. But learning to keep an open heart and share my struggles with the community around me has shown me that is what people value. They want to know that they aren’t alone and that there are other people who are going through the same life challenges as them. They want all of the deep messy stuff and the authentic real moments more than they want to see another sponsored post. And I’ve found that the more I stay open, the more wonderful people and experiences gravitate my way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a creative soul by nature, I’ve dabbled in many areas from making earrings to blogging. I love it all! However, the area that has seemed to stick with me most is creating content to inspire women. I love being a source of empowerment for other women and always try to keep it real. I know firsthand the struggles that many of us go through- from navigating relationships to learning how to take care of ourselves in such a fast-paced world. Content creation, primarily through my Instagram (@mia.latoy), has allowed me to share my heart and, most importantly, connect with so many cool women around the world. It’s all about community for me. I think my proudest moment as a content creator was landing a partnership with Aerie. They are a brand that is all about empowering women and getting to represent them, now for two years, has been such a dream. It also let me know that all of the efforts I’ve invested into my blogging career was actually working!

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is living a life that is fully aligned. I don’t ever want to settle. I want to ensure that I am only surrounding myself with the things or people that light me up and that I know I can also give my full effort to. A life full of adventure, meaningful work, and deep relationships is what I am here for. Complacency is the thief of a meaningful life.
