Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyssa Rubio.
Hi Nyssa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Owner of Moonstone Boutique. About a year ago, I started selling crystals on Instagram. I am from an immigrant family and I have three siblings. Growing up, if I wanted my parents to buy me something I liked, it was rarely an option. We grew up low-income so that meant a lot of things were restricted. I started working at the age of 12 by helping my uncles with their small business in order to earn money to buy the things I couldn’t easily get. I haven’t stopped working since. I always loved having the extra income coming in and did a lot of “side hustles” but none that ever stuck. Always dreaming of one day having a business of my own and be my own boss. A year ago, when I started selling crystals on Instagram never did I think within a few months, I would have my own shop.
From networking and renting out shelves at different shops to now having the opportunity to make my small business vision come true makes this feels so unreal. Knowing I am a Latina business owner makes me so proud to say as unreal as it sounds. Crystals became a huge part of my life as they helped me stay positive and attract positive energy. When I first opened my shop, I wanted to offer more than just crystals. I am a lover for fast fashion and everything trending. I knew I wanted to add affordable clothing where anyone can come in and express themselves through fashion. Growing up, money was always an issue when wanting to stay up to date with anything fashion-related. Having an older sister meant most of my clothes were hand-downs from her. I wanted to make sure that whoever came into my shop could find something they liked at an affordable price. making all my clothing under $30.00. Overall my shop carries Affordable real crystals imported from Brazil, Morocco, México, and many other countries, clothing, & Accessories
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Just like growing up money was always an issue. Starting a business in San Diego wasn’t as easy as it sounds. This meant I had to work extra in order to have the money necessary to start. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it was a smooth ride. Getting started was not easy as I had many doors shut in my face and got plenty of “no’s” along the way. I wanted to start small by renting shelves in different places to try to expand my business. A lot of obstacles came along the way making me want to stop and just drop it all. It became stressing working a full-time job, being a full-time mommy & wife. I felt like everything was coming down. The constant support of my husband and family helped me push through and keep fighting to turn it into a successful business, I just want to say to anybody that wants to start a business to don’t think twice about it and just do it. And do it passionately. –
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Moonstone Boutique has become more than just a small shop for crystals. Although that is what we have been mostly known for, our clothing and apparel has also become incredibly popular! What I’m most proud of is that my inventory is constantly moving, meaning I’m able to keep bringing in new items all the time. One thing that sets me apart from others, and have been told by those that know me, is that my shop is a reflection of me!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
When coming up with “Moonstone Boutique” and our logo, I wanted to implement both my children’s initials somehow. C for Catalina and M for Milan. With the idea, we placed the C in shape of the moon right next to the big M in Moonstone. Also, moonstone is one of my favorite gemstones.
