Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Corral.
Hi Oscar, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m Oscar. I grew up in Tijuana until age 18, later graduating from UC Berkeley with an architecture degree. In my free time working as an architect, I used laser cutters to create gifts and decorative pieces but soon found that people were willing to pay for custom-lasered goods. I started Hexagon Laser, my business, to turn my passion project into my livelihood. I employ many of the skills learned in a career in architecture, including direct customer design consultations and a keen eye for detail and craftsmanship. I’m a minority-owned small business looking to make it big in San Diego and beyond!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first version of my business was all effort but lacking strategy. After a few years of running it without a real plan to scale, I enrolled into the Connect All at the Jacobs Center business accelerator program, where I gained valuable skills and tools to scale my business, have a plan to hire people, and start growing exponentially.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve always been creative, with a huge desire to own and run a business. I enjoy both the design process as well as the fabrication: turning the concept into reality through your own means and with instant gratification! What sets my custom sign service from others is the fact that I’m able to guide my clients through the design process, whether they have a vague idea of what they need or if they want me to enhance their project. Since I own the equipment and machines that produce such designs, the client has complete control over the quality of their custom goods since it’s often questionable to purchase online and wait for weeks to find out if the product is any good. I provide digital and physical prototypes to ensure peace of mind and absolutely stunning results.
