Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Blinn.
Hi Scott, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Roxanne Coverdale-Blinn (my wife) and I love connecting with people all over the world. Over the past 20 years, we have diversified our businesses to reach as many people as possible and also provide creative and helpful services.
I have been an active member of San Diego’s music community since 1992, forming a band called The Mississippi Mudsharks, playing up to seven nights a week which led to touring throughout Europe. Springboarding from there, I started my first local business in the early 2000’s, a recording studio called Grease Punk Studio, and recording many of San Diego’s finest bands. The studio is still quite active today!
In 2011, Roxanne and I formed our band Black Market III and have been touring the U.S. and Europe regularly ever since playing up to 200 nights a year. In 2017 we were signed to Rip Cat Records and released our 5th album, “Dashboard Jesus”. We are currently booking our 10th European tour (my 20th) for the fall of 2022 and recording a new album. Over the years, we also created many music videos, which parlayed into another business venture…BMIII Media Management.
During the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns in 2020, we lost over 100 shows overnight. With no end in sight at the time, we took the belief that this was the time to stay creative, retool the ways we did things, and reach out to people to stress the importance of consistency and “staying on the radar” to not lose ground when things opened up again.
We formed BMIII Media Management to help other musicians, bands, and business owners with the daunting task of running their social media channels, build websites for clients, provide additional promotion for client events, and provide graphic art services. This has also tied into Grease Punk Studio, which now not only is a recording studio but a video production studio as well.
Since touring came to a complete stop in 2020, we parked the tour bus and moved back into our home in Lakeside, CA. We used the downtime to make home improvements, and this September opened up an Airbnb called Hacienda On The Hill. We are located on 2 1/2 acres on top of a hill, with an amazing view of El Capitan Mountain and a beautiful back oasis with an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, and vanishing edge pool.
We decided to put our energy into providing this warm and welcoming place for travelers, much like we’ve been provided on our tours in the U.S. and throughout Europe. It’s been a hit with people from all over! In addition to the Airbnb, we also turned the front area of the Hacienda into a full concert venue complete with stage, sound, lighting, and parking. We will be doing shows here with local and touring acts throughout the year.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being self-employed is never a smooth road, but everything I (and we) have learned along the way has made it all streamlined and efficient. Learning to plan, promote, and do the logistical work well ahead of an event, booking a tour, or even booking the Airbnb, all with a great attention to detail has made the processes a lot easier and outcomes successful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As stated in our story earlier, we have managed to integrate all of our businesses to tie in with each other. From touring internationally in our band Black Market III, to recording bands locally in San Diego (and with our mobile unit in other states!), to helping others do what we’ve been successful doing with social media management and video production, and now opening our Hacienda On The Hill to international travelers and for concerts, there’s a perfect blend of creativity and business success. We’ve forged our own path, doing what we love.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As everything progresses and gets more competitive, the ability to think and act fast and creatively to stay in the forefront will continue to be more and more important.
