Life and Work with Shelby Ligman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Ligman.

Hi Shelby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started with makeup in 2015. I would occasionally do friend’s weddings here and there. In 2017, I was let go of my 9-5 job and with nothing else to lose, I decided to pursue Cosmetology School. A dream I had since I was 18. Fast forward to now and I am now working on clients in the salon and also traveling to beautiful venues to make Brides feel they’re best on one of the most important days in their life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. There are still days where I feel defeated. I worked three jobs while going to school. I shared a bedroom with a schoolmate to try and get by. My first “hair” job I actually walked out on because the owner was clocking us out (without our knowledge) & not paying us our tips. It’s hard to start and find a salon to call home. I’ve learned many mistakes along the way. But looking back, everything made me stronger.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In the salon, I have a lot of blonde clients. Usually, clients want a lower maintenance look. Outside the salon, I am a Wedding Hair & Makeup Artist. My bridal clientele comes to me for soft glam and boho styles. This year, in general has been my proudest. I’ve been able to make dreams come true for clients as well as being awarded 2021 Top 10 San Diego Wedding Hair & Makeup Artists & Best of Weddings 2021 on The Knot. I think communication and being punctual has really been able to make my business stand out.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
That not everyone will love you or your work. So don’t take it personal. You are not meant for everyone and that is okay.
