Meet Adam Uribe of Red Earth Ovens in Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Uribe.

Adam, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Red Earth Ovens: A Feast For All The Senses. Red Earth Ovens provides opportunities to create and celebrate Mother Earth’s many gifts in the heart of an outdoor kitchen. The Red Earth Oven cooks, roasts, and smokes inside a 100% all-natural red clay ceramic shell. It is an age-old sustainable method of experiencing unforgettable earthen flavors. Each oven is custom-built and handcrafted with red clay harvested directly from the Earth. The oven allows us to nourish our bodies as we indulge in the earthen flavors.

The fire is at the heart of a Red Earth Oven. Working with the best woods mother nature provides, all firewood is gathered with sustainable practices that consider the ecology of the landscape. The authentic full-bodied tastes, aromas and sounds of sizzling goodness leave one with a grounded feeling after each meal, it’s amazing.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our main obstacle has been communicating the concepts and the value of the Red Earth Oven. We are in continuous collaboration in order to develop various ways to engage the community at large such as pop-up dinners, workshops, social media, as well as talks at our local colleges and universities. Amid a society that values individualism, convenience, and a fast-paced lifestyle, the Red Earth Oven stays true to sustainable farming practices, traditional cooking techniques, and authentic flavors.

Please tell us about Red Earth Ovens.
Red Earth Ovens is a company local to Encinitas, California-grown and California made in San Diego county. It is a business run by indigenous people- men and women of all ages, from all walks of life. Our people are our most valued assets. Red Earth Ovens started in a little front yard in the midst of three garden beds. Operating primarily in the regenerative agriculture industry, we are proud to say our mission aligns with the United Nations agenda for sustainability titled “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda…” with emphasis on indigenous peoples, climate action, sustainable communities, and zero hunger.

The most popular item we offer is the Hybrid Oven. The Hybrid Oven is a double-decker with the fire on the bottom, food on top, and bbq on the outside. Generations of oven-makers have crafted this design in a proprietary artisanal way, making the Red Earth Oven one of a kind.

Our Food Is Medicine service features wholesomely prepared, seasonal crafted cuisines, and the most important aspect: your closest family members’ participation in special events. Our Seed-to-Table service is the most educational food experience covering topics all the way from the seed saving process to cooking techniques. Red Earth Ovens also offers a four-year apprenticeship program that teaches people to live in tune with natural law, grow food, and learn how to craft the Red Earth Oven.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
As a child, my most fond memory was eating together. This is an important value that high lights the importance of active participation, collective agreement, and communal learning. This starts at an early age and is handed down generation to generation.
