Meet Adrian Ahearn of Dylan’s Steel Band

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Ahearn.

Adrian is the Musical Director of Dylan’s Steel Band. He sings, plays steel drums (tenor, double guitar, and bass pan) and plays the bass (upright and electric). He earned the degree Bachelor of Music/Jazz Studies, Performance from San Diego State University in 1996. Upon graduation Adrian married his lovely wife Heather and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in the music program at Travis AFB in Fairfield, CA. In his last year while enlisted, he was the Musical Director for his unit, Galaxy. He received the awards Outstanding Bandsman in 1999 and Airman of the Year in 2000. When he returned home to San Diego he began studying and performing on steel drums. His first gig was at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. At the same time, he played bass for many fine local bands, one of which won the Album of the Year at the San Diego Music Awards and a Grammy Nomination/ Modern Blues in 2002.

He formed Dylan’s Steel Band when his son, Dylan, was 2 years old. “I held him up to the sky and said, “I work for you, kid”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Running a band is like herding cats, Fortunately Dylan’s Steel Band is blessed to be comprised of great musicians…dependable and professional.

Personally, however, it has never been easy raising a family as a musician. It’s so unpredictable. It’s been more like a daring adventure.

Please tell us about Dylan’s Steel Band.
We provide soulful Caribbean music (reggae/calypso) featuring the palatable sounds of the steel drum delivered with power and passion.

Dylan’s Steel Band has performed up and down the west coast from San Diego to Seattle, from Las Vegas to Phoenix. I’m most proud of our consistency… we deliver mind blowing performances. Other than that, what sets us apart is our goal… we aim to exceed our audience/client’s expectations.

Word of mouth is King. We look for ways to go over the top for our clients…if they pay for a trio, we give them a quartet. If they pay for six guys, we give them seven. Always with the intent of delivering a better musical performance. If they dig the band, they’ll hire us again and tell their friends about us. Word of mouth is KING!
