Meet AJ Machado

Today we’d like to introduce you to AJ Machado and Sara Perry. They share their story with us below:

After years as radio personalities on some of San Diego’s top radio stations, AJ Machado and Sara Perry pivoted to podcasting and created “ALL IN San Diego,” a weekly show that highlights the people and places that make San Diego awesome.
In early 2020 the duo was hosting “AJ and Sara Mornings” on Audacy’s Sunny 98.1 when they were suddenly let go despite solid ratings. After years of working for other people on big radio stations, they decided to create something of their own and “ALL IN San Diego” was born. The duo has released more than 50 episodes highlighting the people (Sam the Cooking Guy, Master Chef winner Claudia Sandoval, San Diego Zookeeper Rick Schwartz) and places (Balboa Park, Little Italy, Chula Vista) that make San Diego awesome. The podcast has built a loyal following across San Diego County and has become a great platform for local businesses to promote themselves to an active local audience!
“ALL IN San Diego” can be heard on all major podcast platforms and at The show ranks in the top 1% of all global podcasts according to

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Creating the show was the easy part because it was just a new evolution of something we’ve both done for years. Our initial challenge was learning about the podcast landscape and figuring how to do everything on our own, no engineers, web department producers etc.. Now that we’re up and running our focus continues to be on getting the word out about the podcast…it’s a big county and we have new listeners and sponsors finding us every day!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My San Diego Journey began in the early 2000’s when I arrived in San Diego to host “AJ’s Playhouse” on Channel 933. I went on to host “AJ in the Morning” on Star 94.1 “The AJ Show” on Energy 103.7 before finally teaming up with Sara on Kyxy 96.5 and Sunny 98.1. I’m most proud of  the “AJ’s Kids Crane” fundraiser which has raised million of dollars and toys for Rady Children’s Hospital. Hosting “ALL IN San Diego” has been an amazing way to keep creating content for the San Diego audience and I’m so lucky that I get to do it with my incredibly talented friend Sara!

Sara: SDSU brought me to San Diego but radio is what made me stay, and I’m proud to say SD has been home for the last 26 years!
What started out as a summer internship spinning the prize wheel for Star 100.7 ended up being an amazing 17-year run working for the station through its many iterations.
I have loved every job and stop along my radio career but the last few years working with AJ for KyXy 96.5 and Sunny 98.1 doing mornings were some of the most fun and rewarding.
I’m so grateful we get to continue working together creating podcasts and content that highlight our love of San Diego!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?

What I love most about San Diego is that every time you think you’ve seen all there is to see and done everything there is to do you discover that it’s just the tip of the iceberg! There aren’t many places in the world where you can explore a sleepy mountain town like Julian, enjoy world class urban eats in a neighborhood like North Park, hike around Escondido’s Lake Dixon and feel the sand between your toes on the beaches of Oceanside all in the same day!

It’s hard to think of anything San Diego could improve on, honestly. But if I’m really digging for something I would say public transit. Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could get to every nook and cranny and experience every unique little neighborhood in the county via bus or trolley?
AJ: What’s not to love? There is SO much diversity not just in the people but in the food, the culture and the entertainment. The fact that we’ve already done 50+ episodes of “ALL IN San Diego” and we are still discovering new things every week says a lot about how much this county has to offer!
