Meet AJ Reyes of Rack N Roll Woodwerx in Lemon Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to AJ Reyes.

AJ, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, long story short, I grew up with two drug-addicted parents and in my late teens got addicted to crystal meth myself. My mother was one of the biggest crystal meth dealers in San Diego and I mean that literally, my father was a drug attic who died of AIDS by using needles to shoot up heroin. After fighting through A detox that I put myself through I broke my way out of drug addiction to crystal meth and Began working several jobs spending all the way from a shoe salesman, a car salesman, a Bounty Hunter, a diver for the Shipyards A crane operator for the civilian side of the Navy, and that’s where I began making things out of wood. It started with me making things for my p A crane operator for the civilian side of the Navy, and that’s where I began making things out of wood. It started with me making things from pallets like wine racks, surfboard racks, gun racks and evolved into a full-blown 1500 ft.² custom woodworking shop that I own and run. There is a lot more detail in between but that’s just broken down in the most interesting points.

Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth road is the last thing that it has been. From fighting my way through addiction to the constant voices in my head to becoming a business owner was a long and arduous road. There were so many challenges along the way that it would take a long conversation to describe them all in detail. BUT, capital I, capital H, a capital smooth road is the last thing that it has been. From fighting my way through addiction to the constant voices in my head to becoming a business owner was a long and arduous road. There were so many challenges along the way that it would take a long conversation to describe them all in detail. BUT, I have overcome and continue to overcome the many various trials that come along not just with being a business owner but in dealing with life in general and also running a business while balancing family, work, educating myself in new techniques, etc.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
More than anything I would say that I am most proud of the creativity that I display in the items that I make they are not run-of-the-mill everyday items and I always try to add a touch of personalization to each piece so that everyone who purchases something from he gets a 100% unique piece.
