Meet Alex Blank of Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt in Old Town SD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Blank.

Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt started as a passion project that I never anticipated would become a business. I had participated in a few (relatively simple) scavenger hunts and clue-based races, and I was inspired to see if I could create something really cool. So, I spent about a year designing a point-based game in San Clemente. It came out so well that I decided to release it to the public.
Still inspired to create another course, I came up with the Murder Mystery format for Laguna Beach. It’s a more intricate design because rather than just obtaining an answer for points, this format allows something you’ve solved to be relevant and intertwined with other elements solved at a different point of the game. It added a new dimension to the experience of solving clues out in the real world. I spent a full year coming up with enough clues and tweaking them until I decided it was ready for the public, and the first Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt debuted in Laguna Beach in 2013.
I spent the next year reworking the clues in San Clemente to fit the Murder Mystery format. And the next year was devoted to designing a course for Old Town SD, which was unveiled 4/27/15.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, I would not describe it as a smooth road.
Although I love designing the courses, part of it involves intense frustration. Some sections flow out easily, but some parts involve working through severe writer’s block.
I also learned the hard way not to make a clue out of anything owned by an existing business, because if they move or go out of business, I may have a very short time to redesign a large section of the game.
Technical problems with the website and dealing with tech support can chew away days of your life.
I ran a promotion with a 3rd party company online who promoted our scavenger hunts by selling vouchers, and then did not pay us our share.
But it is definitely the most rewarding endeavor I’ve been a part of. To spend a year designing a project, inspired by the belief that each section is something special… but not able to show anyone along the way. And then, finally, after over a year of prep, people play it… And they have an amazing time with it. I see people genuinely excited at the end of the game. People travel to all 3 courses and then tell me they can’t wait for the next on to be done. The reviews we get on Yelp and Trip Advisor. It all inspires me to design more.

Please tell us about Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt.
We do events that are unlike anything else out there. Our scavenger hunts are designed to be challenging and entertaining for adults. Most other scavenger hunts guide you to an area, and all you have to do is prove you found the object you’re looking for. For example, you find a specific statue, and you write the name of the artist, or take a picture. Then you move on to the next question. Not with us! In our events, once you find what you’re looking for, you have to then solve some type of clue or puzzle or riddle, or decode a message using the item you found along with something we have given you. As you solve these clues, you eliminate suspects. And once you’ve been through the whole course, you have determined who the murderer is. There can be up to 11 teams playing at one time competing to solve it faster than the other teams.
Another thing that sets us apart from some others is that we want you to experience the real world. Our games are designed so that a smart phone is not needed and will not help you.
We do events that are open to the public on weekends where you can sign up as an individual team and compete against other teams playing that day. And we also do private corporate teambuilding events that can be booked any day of the week.
What I am most proud of is the unique design of the game and the feedback from customers both in person and in online reviews left on Yelp.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
