Meet Alex Guillen of Alex Guillen Music in Linda Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Guillen.

Alex, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in a household surrounded by music, I was exposed to a variety of music styes and genres. My dad was somewhat of an audiophile at the time so we always had the latest super high-end sound system with a huge music library ranging from Bach to The Beatles to Jazz and early electronic music. My dad also showed me how to play the Spanish guitar which I would play for countless hours almost every day.

Eventually, I was good enough to start booking some gigs performing at local art spaces and coffee houses for tips. After a while people started coming up to me asking me to play for their private parties which pays a lot more. Pretty soon I developed a solid professional reputation and started to get referrals for other lucrative bookings as well.

In 2003, I co-produced my first CD, “Nuevo Paraiso” with my World Music Trio and managed a successful tour of Hawaii. It was then when I decided I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. So I quit a lucrative full time job in telecommunications in order to commit 100% of my time to the music business.

In time, I learned the ins and outs of the business side of the music industry through trial and error. It was a huge struggle at first, and it still is at times but in 2010 I made it official and created my company, Alex Guillen Music.

Currently, I’m keeping a very busy performance schedule and have have decided to finish my undergraduate program at Berklee Online – Berklee College of Music where I’m earning a degree in Music Composition for Film, TV, and Games. Composing is something that I have always done but I wanted to enhance my skills with some of the more technical aspects of composing such as audio production with a focus on specific media.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a very challenging career path, but the rewards are immeasurable. I can’t imagine doing anything else! Some of the toughest struggles came from acceptance from friends and family regarding my decision to make my career in music. Most of them just couldn’t understand why I would want to choose an industry that is so difficult to make a living in. I understood where they were coming from; the music business is unforgiving. They thought I was being reckless and irresponsible with my life but they just didn’t know how much music really meant to me and how determined I was to make it work as a career choice for me. They finally came to the realization that I wasn’t going to give up and that I was committed to making it in music so they eventually accepted it and supported my decision.

Another struggle for me was balancing the creative and business aspects of music. The music industry has changed drastically in the past decade and you have to be on top of the marketing and technological trends in order to keep up. So a lot of my time is spent with researching potential clients and keeping in contact with them through emails and phone calls. Book keeping such as accounts receivable and payable and filing business taxes is something I needed to get comfortable with as well. An entrepreneurial mind-set was something that I had to developed over time in order to help me succeed.

I am the founder of Alex Guillen Music, an events and entertainment production company with over 20 years of experience producing reliable music entertainment services for venues, event planners, non profit organizations and corporations in the Greater San Diego and Orange County Areas.

As a professional event guitarist and music talent provider, I’ve worked with some of the top meeting & party planners, business owners, event services coordinators, live event services providers, vendors and companies in Southern California.

Our specialties include:

For example, If I am performing a wedding I will arrange any song of the couple’s choice as a beautiful solo guitar arrangement tailor-made for them. If the client chooses I can even compose a special piece of music for their event.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the weather as well as the beaches, parks, museums, restaurants, and communities. I dislike the housing affordability which makes it difficult for someone who is self-employed to own a home.
