Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Guzman.
Alexa, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I graduated high school I had NO idea what I wanted to be or what direction to go until I came across Cosmetology. I figured what could it hurt to just go to the orientation? I immediately fell in love with what they had to offer and that’s when I first discovered my passion for hair. Cosmetology school was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life but it was my passion and ambition that kept me going. I met some amazing ladies and mentors along the way who have not only taught me skills but have taught me a lot about who I am and what I love. While I was in Cosmetology I applied for a receptionist position in a high end salon where I could get my feet wet in the salon world. Best decision I ever made!! I learned SO much about what goes into being a hairstylist and running a salon. I was so inspired by the salon owner.. everything she was and everything she created for herself that I just had to work by her side! She offered an assistant program where you worked for hand in hand with her and her clients as a way to learn everything you didn’t learn in cosmetology AND MORE!!! I assisted her for about five to six months and I can whole heartedly say she was the absolute best mentor I could have ever asked for.
She inspired me SO much that I discovered a new goal of mine.. to have my own salon. With my new goal in mind, I set my eyes on the prize. After assisting I then went on booth rental to build my clientele and within a couple of years, I had a solid base of loving and supportive clients. So thankful for all of the opportunities I was given at my current salon home but I was ready to spread my wings and fly. I then leaped faith into running my own salon studio and boy did I have every fear running through my head.. what if I don’t make it, what if I can’t pay my rent every month, what if my clients don’t follow me, etc.. and here I am 3 years later blessed, successful and oh so happy. All of my worst fears were quickly put to rest with all of the unconditional love and support I had received (and continue to receive to this day) from all of my beautiful clients. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today without them and they mean the absolute world to me! I’m so in love with what I do and how far I’ve come. I can’t wait to see what more the future holds for me!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the biggest struggles I’ve had in my career is accepting that not everyone wants to see you win or at least not do better than them. Unfortunately, the Cosmo industry is very competitive and catty. Although I haven’t always met the most positive supportive people I’ve always kept in mind all of the people who have helped me and taught me things along the way and I pride myself on paying it forward by helping those who are looking to learn new things just as I given those opportunities. It’s most important to stay humble and positive. If we all come together and support each other we can truly create something special.
Tell us more about the business.
I Give Good Hair is a one woman show (for now.. I’m looking to expand sometime in the future) and I offer a variety of services such as women’s haircuts, blow dry/styling, balayage, Ombre, baby lights, highlights, lowlights, all over color of all styles, color melts, keratin deep conditioning treatments, keratin smoothing treatments, gloss treatments, color sealing treatments, sealed ends treatment, etc. Although all of my services are popular the two I perform the most are balayage and keratin smoothing treatments. I’ve spent years perfecting my craft and can proudly say I truly give good hair! I pride myself on providing a cozy, safe place where my clients can come relax and leave feeling as beautiful as ever!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t quite believe in good luck. I believe in hard work and dedication and I’ve worked my butt off to be in the position I am today but I’m also a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Every single thing. The good and the bad all lead you to exactly where you’re meant to be.
