Meet Alexandra G. Arias of Elite Yoga Studios in La Jolla and Carmel Valley Road

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra G. Arias.

Alexandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a native of Ecuador, a beautiful country in South America. I danced professionally for the Ecuadorian ballet company from the age of 16 up to 20 years old. I moved to the United States at 21 to learn English and met my husband of now 25 years.

My yoga journey started after the birth of my 4th child, in Hong Kong. I had a very challenging time physically, in that, I was probably at my heaviest weight. I used to spin and teach aerobics, but this time, at 40 years old and with a brand new baby; I felt just discouraged.

Our family moved back to the US in 2009 and started attending yoga classes all over SD. I was surprised to see that classes were fast pace and little instructions. For the most part, classes did not meet my physical needs.

I decided to get certified as a yoga instructor to improve my yoga practice but also to teach Yoga in my home. This is when it all began! My classes were filing up, friends were coming from all over SD to attend my classes. I tried to focus on helping women achieve their very best self! We went through the journey together until we saw results. I was asked to rent a space to hold the classes, instead; I decided to apply for an SBA loan. I bought a small place in La Jolla and started teaching 15 classes a week with only a hand full of amazing instructors. After a year, I open a second studio in Carmel Valley Rd hiring a new set of instructors.

We have grown to about 300 classes a week, 20 instructors, 2 studios and currently are looking for our third and fourth location! So much to celebrate! Our yoga retreats are full and are such great success, we are so grateful.

I founded Elite Yoga to create a community where yoga is accessible for all types of people. Whether you’ve been practicing yoga for years or are just starting out, Elite Yoga offers a space to find support, hands-on adjustments, no judgment, caring and compassionate instructors. Elite Yoga seeks to improve our clients’ health one class at a time. Elite Yoga’s boutique style studios are committed to offering daily yoga classes to better the physical health, emotional wellbeing, mental clarity and a joy of living in each and every one of our clients! We know our clients by name and have become family to us.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning two studios, in its beginnings was very challenging. The first two years where the most difficult ones for me. I seemed to second guess my abilities. I also felt nervous about having the mental strength to handle the business aspect of it. I am pretty sure I cried a lot…

I have watched my husband build a business from nothing to success, he inspired me so much to not give up those long two years. His favorite quote to me was and still is: “Alex, just take it one day at a time, do the best you can today, fix what you can tomorrow and enjoy the journey”

I am finally enjoying the journey, the days are not perfect, but I love what I do, I love our clientele, I love our managers, I love prancing yoga in my studios every day, sometimes twice a day 🙂 I probably love teaching yoga the most. I am grateful that I am able to share my passion and love of yoga with others. When I see people change or achieve their goals that is when it is all worth it to me.

Please tell us about Elite Yoga Studios.
Elite Yoga has designed a framework of heated and non-heated yoga classes to help clients/students achieve their personal wellness goals. We offer all levels Vinyasa classes, Ashtanga, Yoga Basics, Yin Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Gentle Yoga flows, as well as 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training and amazing Yoga Retreats! The heart behind each class is to create an experience designed to improve the quality of health – a marriage between mental, physical and emotional well-being. Each class is viewed as a stepping-stone to a healthy lifestyle.

We are known for having smaller classes that have a feel of an almost private class. We are able to help clients individually since classes are not crowded. Our studios are spotless clean. We are also known for hiring very well trained instructors who are fun, loving, engaging with a strong yoga practice themselves.

I am most proud that when a client leaves our studios, they are changed! I just love that we can provide a better quality of life to others.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory would have to be when my mother bought me a doll when I was 9 years old. It was the prettiest doll I have ever seen. One afternoon, we went out for lunch with our big family, 8 kids plus mom and dad. I traded my doll for a pair of earrings another girl had at the restaurant.

I got in trouble, of course; but I still love and have my beautiful pair of earrings. My first business transaction.
