Meet Alyssa Nicole of Selflyss in Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Nicole.

Alyssa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our journey started with our own personal self-care journey and diving into the world of holistic health and eastern medicine. Oil pulling has been a habitual part of our morning routine in our daily lives for the past four years. This idea came to us while traveling abroad. We started noticing all of the single-use plastic and trash that covers beaches worldwide while also noticing all of the chemicals in our beauty care products. It became a bit frustrating and we made it our goal to do something about it and be that someone. While backpacking India, we learned about the medicinal benefits of Clove Bud and Peppermint, specifically for oral care, while staying on a self-sustainable eco-farm. We put all of our passions and ideas together to create something we love and something we personally use in our daily lives.

Our products are a reflection of our core belief that Mother Nature has been divinely designed with the solutions humans need to thrive and live our best and most meaningful lives. Selflyss is committed to creating synergistic wellness products that improve the quality of life on all levels physically, spiritually, and mentally. Selflyss creates eco-friendly, natural products for people of all ages and aims to raise awareness around holistic health and zero-waste practices. Our mission is to make a difference – both in the personal lives of our customers and in the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business does have its ups and downs, as does everything in life but we’ve learned to surrender to the ebbs and flows and stay grateful for the journey. We launched the business as soon as the pandemic hit and it made some things more difficult. With some patience, we were able to work through it smoothly and still get the company launched. It’s been such a learning journey as this is our first time in the business world and at times, it can feel overwhelming running a small business with no prior experience, but that’s what makes it fun!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Selflyss – what should we know?
My company started from a burning passion to spread awareness around the healing magic nature has to offer us and sustainability. The name Selflyss is a mix between my name Alyssa, and the word “selfless,” which means having selfless actions towards our bodies, the animals, and the planet. Our passion for ancient Ayurvedic practices and the eastern medicine world is what we hold so dear to our hearts that we want to share with the world. Our products are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly — meaning they won’t cause harm to your skin, our oceans, or our planet.

I’m proud that my company stands for what I believe in and we won’t settle for anything less, no matter how hard it may be. What sets us apart from others is the simplicity of our ingredients. We believe less is more.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and support from my mom, my partner, and all of my friends. They have all been cheering me on and helping me since day one. I give credit to all the teachers and gurus I have learned from, that teach me all about herbs and ancient Ayurvedic practices. Lastly, I give credit to nature- for providing us the medicine we need to heal. I am constantly inspired by the beauty around us and all the world has to offer us.
