Meet Amber H Dickens of Adaria Designs by ahd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber H Dickens.

Amber, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always had a knack for putting things together. I always loved making things “pretty”. I would walk into a new space and instantly redesign it in my head or see a piece of art and try to figure out how I could put my own spin on it.

When I was about eight or nine years old, my great aunt would hire me to make invitations for get-togethers at her house for the children in the neighborhood. I taught myself how to design cards on my grandmother’s computer. I have always been interested in making things pretty, which I realized later was my interpretation of design.

Flash forward to 2010 when I was looking for invitations for my wedding and couldn’t find anything that I absolutely loved, so I created it. Shortly after my wedding, my wedding planner asked me to design some invitations for a few of her clients’ events.

After a few referrals, I became a business and have been growing my business ever since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most of my challenges in the past have been from not taking myself seriously as a business, not believing that what I had to offer was something that people considered important, or would pay for. Once, I believed more in myself and in my talent, things actually started taking off.

Now, my struggles are more with my time I am a wife and a mother so every moment is valuable so I have to make it all work, which can be exhausting. After I’m able to recharge a bit then I find myself more excited and more creative.

Adaria Designs by ahd – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Adaria Designs by ahd is a stationery design company specializing in paper goods for weddings and other special events. I love how we don’t just fit into one box. Our designs are elegant, chic and fun. We are light and airy at times but also bright and bold others.

I love the customer relationships that we have built, attention to detail and the personal touch for every client that we have. We work with clients across the country, even so, we are able to connect on a personal level with them. We truly love being a part of the planning experience.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Wow, quite honestly I had a few lately. I love how I’m constantly surprising myself with how far I can push my creativity. However, I would have to say it was securing my first venue partnership. I am not an outgoing person by nature, so when I got a call to meet with a venue to be added to their list I was nervous and had no idea what to say or how to present myself and my company.

My meeting was literally 7 minutes long and I walked out of it there more confident than when I walking in 7 minutes prior. After that meeting, I realized that I was my own obstacle and that nothing could stand in my way. I went from being afraid to talk about my business to making cold calls and presentations just by believing that I could, that hearing a no just meant that there was a yes in another place or situation.
