Meet Amy Clover of Strong Inside Out in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Clover.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m the owner and creator of Strong Inside Out, a community that inspires and supports people in building individual health without scales or judgments, but there was a time when getting out of bed was my win for the day. I struggled with clinical depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder for most of my life, landing me in the hospital multiple times on suicide watch. It wasn’t until I found fitness that things started to turn around for me.

I realized that as I began to feel stronger and more capable in the gym, I began to feel that way outside of it as well. The work I was doing with my therapist stuck longer and I began to feel more confident. This revelation led me to become a personal trainer, and eventually to starting Strong Inside Out in 2011 so that I could help more people than I could with my brick and mortar business.

I found that people weren’t reading my articles because of my fitness tips – it was the vulnerability I shared about my story that drew people to Strong Inside Out. People came out of the woodwork when I talked about my depression and anxiety and how exercise had helped. When I started to talk about my recovery from eating disorders, even more people felt drawn to the message.

Recently, we shifted our focus just last year to make our message even more specific. Through my own personal growth, helping numerous clients and simply observing the trend in the world today, we decided to create a place where people could land for individualized, SANE health creation and maintenance. We’re not going to tell you how you need to look, eat or move to be enough. We’re going to show you that you get to decide AND anything you choose is OK. Health is supposed to feel good not just when you get to your goal, but on the way, and Strong Inside Out is here to help you release all the shame and judgment that keeps you from it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all. Strong Inside Out is all about helping people own and learn from their struggles, and I’ve made it a point to do my share of research!

One of my major struggles was returning to recovery in 2015 for an eating disorder. Being a fitness professional, this was the ultimate taboo. I suffered from a lot of stigma even though Strong Inside Out is all about breaking the stigma around mental health issues. I was sure that it was different for me – like I was held to a higher standard than every other human being.

Devoting myself to healing, however, gave me so many gifts and new tools for my clients. I became more compassionate with myself and my clients. I gained deeper insight into the cycles that so many people get stuck in, causing them to diet and binge over and over again. Recovery was a wakeup call that opened my eyes to a side of the fitness industry that had long gone unnoticed. It actually changed the trajectory of the business, allowing us to carve out a new space that hadn’t been claimed.

Please tell us about Strong Inside Out.
Strong Inside Out is a community to draw strength from, a source of energy to encourage you, and a momentum to support you on your journey to true Health. Specifically, we help people shed shaming, metric-based health standards and embrace individual Health instead.

Many people find themselves at Strong Inside Out after realizing that restrictive diets, rigid workout programs, or perfectionistic positivity goals have left them feeling like they’ll never be enough. We’re the community that reminds them that it’s not them, it’s the generic, rigid, extremist techniques and ideals they’ve been peddled! We’re the ones who remind you that health shouldn’t feel like torture; it should feel like home.

I head up Strong Inside Out by offering articles and health-boosting goodies for free on the site, but for those who want to take their health to the next level, I offer individual coaching and group courses. You can check it all out at

What I believe sets us apart from others is our approach to Health and my personal experience with all sides of it. I’ve been through the ringer with depression, anxiety, eating disorders and over-exercising, AND COME BACK FROM IT. I share everything I’ve learned through my personal experience and tons of research on the site and in my programs. Because I’ve been through it, I have a deeper level of appreciation for those who are going through it in the moment.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. It took every obstacle and face plant to get me to where I am right now, and I honestly love where I am and where Strong Inside Out is (and is going).
