Meet Amy Legaspi of Soft PlayZone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Legaspi.

Amy , can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It was on a Saturday morning I was laying in bed thinking about a solution for my youngest son’s first birthday event. I wanted entertainment for our infant and toddler guests. I also wanted to give parents a break however didn’t want the little guests to be crawling around on the dirty floor or be carried throughout the duration of the party. Then the idea hit me, a play area for infants and toddlers. That’s when I excitedly elbowed my husband who was sound asleep and yelled out, “I have a genius idea!”. And that was how Soft PlayZone started.

It was a hit at our party and parents were raving how great this play area was. The kids were entertained in a safe, fun and soft environment while the parents had a nice break while being close to their kids. Ed and I felt that we needed to share this convenience and solution to parents with little kids all over San Diego! That’s when our mission and vision became a reality. Not only are we providing solutions to many parents of the San Diego and surrounding communities, but we love seeing the little kids happy in our Soft PlayZone.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would be lying if I said it has been a smooth road. I would say that there have been 3 major challenges. Knowing where to start was a big challenge to overcome. I have never started a business before so friends who had their own businesses generously helped point me into the right direction and Google was a good way to find out more information.

The second major challenge was understanding what the strategic approach to the market would be. We are the first mobile play area in San Diego. At first, I thought it was going to be a breeze getting the business out there. I created an Instagram account and added several hashtags that had anything to do with “San Diego” and “toddler party” in them. I thought since we had a great idea, of course it was easy to market and we will get so many customers. Boy, was I wrong! It took us several months to gain traction in the market and getting customers to know us.

The third challenge is balancing the business with family time. Both Ed and I have full time careers during the weekday therefore we service parties during the weekends and that can cut into family time. These challenges and obstacles make us stronger as a business. We succeed and we also fail and those failures are what allows us to improve and keep us moving forward in a better way!

We are San Diego’s first mobile play area. Our mission is to provide a safe, enriching and fun environment for babies and toddlers to crawl, climb, explore and play! We take pride in our tagline: Safe, Soft and Fun.

Soft PlayZone is a mom owned business serving San Diego communities. We provide parents with the convenience of soft play equipment to the comfort and privacy of their home or venue for all types of events including birthdays, play groups, weddings, baby showers and many more! Soft PlayZone will keep your infants and toddlers safe and entertained at your event. We provide a great birthday party idea solution for infants and toddlers. We can set up Soft PlayZone indoors and outdoors for your little guests!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
One important lesson I have learned is that I would have taken more time to market my business. I would probably have done more marketing than I thought I should. Marketing, partnerships, and promoting the business are worth the time and money!
