Meet Amy McCabe of Studio Reform Pilates in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy McCabe.

Amy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a long time Pilates & Yoga Instructor in San Diego! It has always been my dream to own my very own studio. In Feb 2017 that dream became a reality when I opened Studio Reform Pilates! SRP is a small group reformer studio in Hillcrest. I wanted to create a space with good energy, where the teachers were excited to be teaching & the students were happy to be there!

I am originally from Anchorage, Alaska. This will be my 10th year living in San Diego! I moved here right after graduating from the University of Montana. I thought this would be a great place to live before I started “my real life & real career.” Well, it turns out this is my permanent home! I met my Massachusetts born husband here, adopted a Chihuhua & now we have 2 kids (Emerson-2.5 & Holden 2 mos.). I’m so lucky to do what I love every day- teach Pilates & Yoga! Through the years I’ve met so many wonderful people & I am thankful that I get to help shape their bodies, minds & spirits through the classes I teach. This studio was a dream I’ve had for at least 8 years & I think fulfilling a long time dream is one of the most rewarding things you can do! It is still so surreal to me when I look up at our huge sign all lit up at night or when I walk into the studio each day alone, I still can’t believe I own this place!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest obstacle hands down was money! I’m not lucky enough to have a rich investor, I’m not loaded, no family money here… my husband & I pieced together the money the best way we knew how. We refinanced our condo, we took out loans, opened business credit cards & we did a lot of the work ourselves! My husband & his friend put in the floors & my good friends painted the studio…Oh I forgot to mention that we had a toddler at the time AND I was pregnant with our second child, so that also proved to be challenging 🙂 It may have taken us 8 years of dreaming, but we did it!!!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Studio Reform Pilates – what should we know?
Studio Reform Pilates is a small studio with BIG heart! We only have 8 reformers in 600 square feet of space, so it’s a cozy space where our instructors can really see you & help you individually if you need extra attention. The walls are painted a cheery green & adorned with hanging succulents & inspirational artwork. Whether you are brand new to Pilates or a seasoned practitioner, we want you to feel right at home when you walk into the space. Another important part of the business to me was making the classes affordable without compromising quality. I still think we have the best classes for the price you pay!

Studio Reform Pilates is a small studio with BIG HEART! With only 8 machines, it gives you the small class feel without having to pay a big price. We keep it simple by only using the reformer & only having 3 types of classes to choose from. The instructors are able to watch your alignment and form, and help you progress at your own pace. The classes are designed to flow from one exercise to the next with minimal spring changes & prop interruptions. By doing this we are able to give you the most we can in 50 min. Our teachers are AMAZING!!!! They are always changing up sequences & routines so you are challenged in different ways & you stay engaged & present in what you are doing. Pilates is FUN! It doesn’t have to be so serious, and while attention to detail is important, we also want you to enjoy your class experience & leave feeling better then when you walked through the door. Pilates doesn’t have to replace what you love, whether it be running, spinning, yoga etc.. But it can complement whatever you are doing currently & you just might find yourself becoming a Pilates addict 🙂 Get to know our small group of dedicated teachers & pop into the studio to check us out.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?

My fabulous TEACHERS!!! I can honestly say that we have some of the best teachers in San Diego! There is no way I could have done it without them! I taught right up until I had our son, and then they really stepped up to teach all of my classes while I was on maternity leave. They are more than just employees- they are family to me!

Our Fabulous Students! We have some of the sweetest most devoted clients! I can’t tell you how many of my teachers tell me that our students are the best around. I think it’s all the good vibes from the studio! 🙂

My VERY patient husband! It’s so cool to have a partner help you in making your dream a reality (despite the fact that he had no idea what a reformer was before we opened:)! Dave has always believed in me & helps me on a daily basis with all the non-fun stuff like accounting, payroll etc…
