Meet Amy Truong of Paru Tea Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Truong.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Paru Tea Bar in May 2017, beginning as a pop-up tea bar and expanded to offer our signature tea blends online. I thought San Diego was the perfect place to start a business because I couldn’t find as many tea options as I wanted. So I thought if I couldn’t find it, I’d create something of my own that I would personally love and wanted to share with the community.

I’ve worked professionally in sales, operations, marketing in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In between jobs I tested tea recipes for over a year and developed blends that sourced organic and with the highest quality ingredients I could find. I found inspiration to create thoughtfully sourced tea blends because many teas out there today are high in artificial flavors and additives.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business, in general, is scary and often times a roller coaster and definitely has unavoidable bumps along the way. Some beginning struggles were – how do I form a company legally? what kind of bank account do I need? Then you learn a lot from those basic bumps and then you learn how to plan more and though you see those bumps, you can do things ahead of time to prevent the impact. That’s also the fun in entrepreneurship!

Please tell us about Paru Tea Bar.
Paru Tea Bar started off as a pop-up tea bar and now has our tea blends available online and in retail stores around San Diego, We’re known for our specialized organic and local tea blends.

We’re proud of the first pop-up tea bar in San Diego and love to continue contributing our tea to the community and non-profit organizations we believe align with our mission.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Everything has been a learning lesson and it’s difficult to think we could’ve done things differently because sometimes failures leads to successes! I don’t think we would’ve changed anything because we appreciated every experience we received through any obstacles we face.
