Meet Angela Amoroso, Drew Skinner, Miah Nwosu of Scripps Performing Arts Academy in Scripps Ranch and Carmel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Amoroso, Drew Skinner, Miah Nwosu.

Angela, Drew, Miah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Angela Amoroso came to San Diego in 1987 after performing and teaching in New York for almost a decade. She founded Scripps Performing Arts in Scripps Ranch and expanded to Carmel Valley to be closer to Del Mar where she lives with her husband Drew Skinner in 2007.

Miah Nwosu started dancing with Miss Angela when she was 8 years old. After sometime in NYC she returned to San Diego and became the School Director in 2006. She founded Scripps Ballet Theatre in 2010.

Drew Skinner a musician and fine woodworker is the creative scenic and technical support for this growing organization.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In 2004, Angela and Drew experienced the passing of their infant daughter, Isabella. “We woke up from our grief 2 years later and created a workshop called, “Good Grief to Go.” Utilizing leading science, ancient wisdom and creativity GGG successfully supports others who have experienced the passing of a loved one. The workshop culminates with an inspirational service activity, “Partnered with Angels” This program creates a path to healing by providing positive experiences for others. Authored an award winning book, “Surrounded by Angels” and created a CD of original songs, “Only for a Moment”

To date we have helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the NICU at UCSD Medical Center, and much more. Most recently, the Palkovic family has raised well over $200K to revitalize a park in Penasquitos – Sienna’s PlayGarden at Rolling Hills Park. Groundbreaking is scheduled for spring of 2018.

Isabella would have turned 13 this past September. We expanded our focus to include the undeserved youth of San Diego. Our new program called, “Stretch” (like our Giraffe friends) offers local businesses and corporations an employee team building experience with a “Day of the Performing Arts” Employees have the opportunity to mentor these young people while enjoying a variety of performing arts classes.

Scripps Performing Arts is delighted to “Stretch” and be directing a boys ballet program for over 50 young men. We are in the midst of raising the necessary funds to transport the students, “A Ballet Bus”

Moving through unimaginable circumstances has been possible by holding true to the performing arts philosophy, “the show must go on” And so we do!

Scripps Performing Arts Academy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Scripps Performing Arts provides a well rounded performing arts education for children of all ages and abilities. We have remained true to the art and have provided what is developmentally best for our students. Children develop and unfold in their own time. Unique as snowflakes, therefore, we do not participate in unhealthy subjective competitions that promote a false sense of self for young children.

We provide excellent and proper technical classes in a variety of dance and musical theatre genres with a focus on a sound ballet foundation. A nurturing non competitive, environment where our students recognize their goal is to be better than they were yesterday, not better than someone else. We inspire our students to appreciate their own unique gifts and talents as well as those in their peers.

Our students have gone on to perform professionally at San Francisco Ballet, PNB, Texas Ballet Theatre, and Boston Ballet, Broadway and films. They have attended a variety of prestigious Universities including, Yale, Stanford, Notre Dame, Brown, UCLA, Clairemont Mckenna, Point Loma Nazarene, UCSD and many more. Our students have also been accepted to prestigious Summer intensives at Julliard, San Francisco Ballet, School of American Ballet, Houston Ballet, Miami City Ballet and many more.

What sets us apart from others. Unlike other businesses that puts the business first, our business model is to always do what is best for our students first and foremost.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When we can inspire a young person to go inside and realize they contain the seeds of unlimited potential… It’s a good day… the criteria? It’s an expression in their eyes that matches their diligence in class… Markers? Everyday is filled with so much joy that it’s hard to describe… long term… we may never see the fruits of our labors, That’s OK, knowing we’ve done the best that we can is enough for now… The rest? That’s what eternity is for…
