Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Leone Buzan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was formerly a professional ballet dancer with the City Ballet of San Diego, this is how I moved to California 8 years ago. My mother first put me in ballet around age 5 and I had a lot of natural talent so I kept with it throughout my whole childhood. Around age 15 I was first introduced to Pilates in South Florida due to stress fractures in my low back. I had never done anything like Pilates before I knew it would be life changing. When I joined CBSD in ’09 I performed with them for four years and slowly realized towards the end of my career that ballet wasn’t going to last forever. I could feel some injuries coming back and I was only in my mid 20s feeling like I was in my 70s.
Mid-season in 2012, I took a teacher training course and smoothly transitioned to teaching Pilates full time in ’13. I never looked back!
Pilates is also an art form like ballet so that’s probably why I fell in love with it so much. Contrology is another name for Pilates which means the art of control. I was intrigued by actually being able to control the muscles in my body with my mind. I worked in various studios around San Diego county until January 2017. I finally found the courage to go off on my own and bring my dream of having a home studio come to life! My husband has supported me through my whole Pilates career, I met him after I stopped dancing. He is my photographer, web site developer/anything I need to know about the business side. My Dad helped me with the teacher training funds and has also supported me through this new journey of being an entrepreneur. Without these three humans I wouldn’t be where I am today!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been pretty smooth so far, no complaints. If your mind is right you can do anything!
Please tell us about Angie’s Pilates Haus.
I am a full time Pilates instructor & business owner preserving the authentic work of Joseph Pilates. I love teaching Pilates to my clients.
Both the client and myself can see the difference it makes in their daily lives and that is what makes me most proud. Pilates is a livelihood at my studio, we do it because you can see and feel that it brings your mind and body to optimal condition which in turn adds value to your life. Privates is my most preferred service but my Ballet dancers come in 3x a week for a Trio, that is a treat. They all know their special routine which significantly improves their body, pretty cool to see the transformation and then watch their dancing look effortless & stay injury free. That is what I specialize in, tailoring the workout to what the body needs in front of me and using my hands to manipulate the body. What sets me apart is having over a decade of knowledge from my past life as a professional ballet dancer; moving is second nature to me and in Pilates you have to move.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Every summer since age 7-12, I went to Colombia, South America for one month with my mom. She was born there so I have a ton of family there. I plan on going again next summer!
