Meet Anna Castellanos of Ámame Desserts in Point Loma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Castellanos.

Anna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started in 2012 when I moved to San Diego from Oxnard, CA (where I am originally from); I came to SD to see what it had to offer such as the job market, scenery, new chapters in life, etc. I was very excited to be in a new city to start a new beginning in life, and as I was settling down into my new home, one day I had a deep thought, a thought of what I wanted to do with my life.

Within the time of thinking, it had occurred to me that I had always loved baking (especially seeing pastry chefs in high school work with cakes), but I was never good like these pastry chefs/cake artists that you see on tv with these gorgeous looking sugar art and exquisite cakes. So I asked myself “why not start and see where this goes, what do I have to lose?”

So at that time, I took some classes at a local Michael’s craft store (and other cake shops) to learn how to decorate cakes and after many trials and lots of errors, I was getting the hang of cake decorating. I knew I had talent; therefore, I wanted to make this hobby into a business. In 2013, I opened up my business to Ámame Desserts.

Within the years, I learned a lot about myself and my business, business isn’t easy, but it has its wonderful perks. I had struggled for six years to be where I am today, but I also had the opportunity to make beautiful cakes for clients that I never thought I could do a while ago.

From the support of my Mom, Dad, Brother, Boyfriend, Friends & Clients, I wouldn’t be who I am today, a Cake Artist.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making/creating a business is not easy… AT ALL! There isn’t really someone guiding you/holding your hand on how to start your own business (unless you pay someone to help you, kudos to you!).

But the truth is, you have to do a lot of research in the products that you want to produce, be disciplined to push where you want to be, it’s all these blood, sweat, and tears that test you to see where you are in business.

You’re always going to make mistakes no matter what in business. But the truth of the matter is, within those mistakes, are you going to give up on everything you have worked so hard for? Not in my book.

As said before, it has taken me six long years to be remotely where I am today; however, there is always challenges and obstacles to reach those goals.

Please tell us about Ámame Desserts.
When we first started, we did not know much of what we actually wanted to do in business except create cakes. Within time (aka years), we found our calling in creating wedding cakes and any special events such as birthdays, business events, etc.

We really love making wedding cakes because we love to see our couples happy with our product. It gives us great satisfaction knowing that we were a part of a great deal in their lives. I mean that doesn’t get better than that I must say *chuckles*. Who doesn’t love cake?!

Our style of cake is really what our couples/clients want. If they want a modern cake, we can do that. If they want a vintage cake, we can do that, if they want a rainbow unicorn decked out in black with the glitter of a wedding cake, we can do that too!

We serve anyone who wants a cake of their liking, whether it’s something odd to something simple, anyone is welcome to bring their creativity out to me. But please no 3-D cakes. *giggles*

Oh, and we are 100% cruelty-free cakes.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood would be making cakes in my easy bake oven and eating it… pretty much of what I still do as an adult today. *chuckles*
